About the Weimar Christmas Market

The Weimar Christmas Market has been a festive tradition for many years, with its roots going back to the 19th century.

Over time, it has grown into one of the city’s main holiday attractions.

Today, the market typically features around 80 stalls, offering everything from gorgeous Christmas decorations to delicious regional foods.

The Weimar Market may be on the small side, but it still draws in about 1 million visitors each year!

We only spent a few hours at this market, but I definitely regret not having more time there.

What Are the Best Christmas Markets in Weimar?

In Weimar, there are four key Christmas market locations: Marktplatz, SchillerstraรŸe, Theaterplatz, and Herderplatz.

As you walk through the city, youโ€™ll easily come across these markets, with traditional wooden stalls lining the streets between them.

Following the path of the markets will allow you to explore the whole festive scene in Weimar, as they are all closely connected and within the city center.

We arrived in Weimar pretty late in the evening, so unfortunately, we were only able to visit the main market in Marktplatz.

Marktplatz

The Marktplatz is the heart of the Weimar Christmas Market.

Itโ€™s the largest and most popular section, located right in the cityโ€™s central square and in front of the Rathaus (City Hall).

Here, you’ll find rows of festive stalls offering a variety of holiday treats, Christmas ornaments, and unique gifts.

We ended up purchasing some really cute mushroom (Piltz) ornaments that reminded me of my childhood.

Weimar Christmas Market - Decorated Stall Rooftops

The stall rooftops were beautifully decorated, though not as elaborate as the ones we saw in Stuttgart’s Markets.

While the marketโ€™s centrepiece is a beautifully lit Christmas tree, you will also find the traditional German Christmas Pyramid here.

Marktplatz is also where you can enjoy some of the best food and drinks, like Thรผringer sausages, Glรผhwein, and local sweets.

SchillerstraรŸe

SchillerstraรŸe is another lively part of the Weimar Christmas Market.

This part of the market stretches along one of the city’s busiest streets. Lined with festive stalls, it also offers a great mix of holiday decorations, gifts, and delicious snacks.

Weimar Christmas Market - Gluฬˆhwein Mug above stand

The street is named after the famous German writer Friedrich Schiller. Youโ€™ll definitely notice a more intimate feel compared to the larger Marktplatz.

Itโ€™s an easy stroll from Marktplatz, so you can experience both areas without much effort.

Theaterplatz

Theaterplatz is another part of the Weimar Christmas Market. You can find it set against the impressive backdrop of the National Theatre.

This area is home to several stalls offering artisanal gifts, local food, and holiday treats.

You will also find live performances and musical entertainment hosted in front of the Theatre during the market.

Theaterplatz also offers a bit more space to wander, making it a nice contrast to the busier Marktplatz.

Herderplatz

Herderplatz is a quieter and more traditional part of the Weimar Christmas Market.

Located near the historic Herder Church, this area offers a more intimate experience with fewer stalls but a strong focus on local crafts and regional foods.

Weimar Christmas Market - Santa's Mailbox

The church provides a beautiful, historic backdrop, giving this part of the market a peaceful and almost timeless feel.

Herderplatz is the perfect place to browse handmade items, like wooden toys and pottery, or maybe enjoy some traditional snacks in a less crowded setting.

Things to Do at the Weimar Christmas Market

The Weimar Christmas Markets offer plenty of activities to get you into the holiday spirit. Here are some of the best things to do while you explore the markets:

1. Sip Warm Glรผhwein

Glรผhwein is a staple at every German Christmas Market. In fact, you will find several Glรผhwein stands in every market.

If you are having trouble finding one, just look for the Christmas Pyramid and you will typically find one housed inside.

I am not exaggerating when I say that sipping this warm drink as you browse the markets is somewhat of a tradition.

Glรผhwein is a spiced mulled wine that is often available in either red or white wine variations.

Weimar Christmas Market - Gluฬˆhwein Stand

However, we did find that the white wine version (my fave) is not available in every market.

One of the best things about indulging in some Glรผhwein in the market is the collector’s mug it comes in. It’s a perfect souvenir!

If you want to keep the mug, which is dated and specific to each market, then just take it home! If not, return the mug to the stall for a refund of the small deposit (Pfand).

And if you don’t drink alcohol, the Kinderpunsch is quite nice as well! It’s all the spiced goodness, without the kick! Our kids loved it.

2. Take a Selfie with the Christmas Pyramid

The Christmas Pyramid is a staple at most German Christmas Markets, and Weimar is no exception.

Weimarโ€™s Christmas pyramid stands tall at around 12 meters (40 feet).

Its design is themed around traditional Christmas figures, with three tiers displaying rotating nativity scenes and angels.

Weimar Christmas Market - Christmas Pyramid

What makes this pyramid extra special is that it doubles as a Glรผhwein stand. Inside the base, you can grab a warm cup of mulled wine or punch, as well as other festive drinks.

If you are looking for the perfect photo for the ‘Gram, the Christmas Pyramid is a very festive backdrop!

3. Shop for Unique Gifts and Souvenirs

I find it really hard to visit a Christmas Market without doing a little shopping!

Not only are the stalls themselves gorgeous, but the vendors offer everything from handmade Christmas ornaments to wooden toys and specialty treats.

I always love to look at the Christmas ornaments. They make the perfect keepsake from the markets.

Weimar Christmas Market - Ceramic ornaments and decorations

The kids are usually more interested in magnets to add to their collection. But these are a little trickier to find.

I justify my shopping in the Market because it’s a great way to support small local vendors! Don’t judge!

I end up coming home with a one-of-a-kind treasure. So it’s a win-win!

4. Catch Live Performances

The sound of music, whether it’s a choir, church bells, or a brass band, always captures my attention at a Christmas Market.

If you are the same, then you will be happy to learn that the Weimar Christmas Market is home to both performances and church bells!

Weimar Christmas Market - Stage area with little Christmas tree in market

We thoroughly enjoyed the chiming bells while strolling through the Marktplatz market.

You can also catch live performances in Theaterplatz throughout the marketโ€™s run.

From local choirs singing Christmas carols to traditional folk music and even brass bands, you will find it all.

The performances usually take place in the late afternoon and early evening. This, of course, sets the perfect mood for sipping on Glรผhwein and exploring the stalls.

5. Marvel at the Gorgeous Nativity

The Christmas Nativity is an iconic fixture that you will find at EVERY German Christmas Market.

That said, each market’s Nativity is different. They are all uniquely decorated and come in different sizes, with some even having live animals as part of the scene.

In Weimar, the Nativity is located in Marktplatz, near the Rathaus and behind the Christmas Tree.

Weimar Christmas Market - Wooden Nativity Scene

The nativity is made up of life-sized hand-carved wooden figures, including the Holy Family, shepherds, and animals, all arranged in a traditional stable setting.

And while the nativity is behind glass, the craftsmanship of the figures was truly something to see!

You don’t need to be religious to admire the artistic skill that it took to design this gorgeous scene.

6. Try Thรผringian Delicacies

If you can make it through a German Christmas Market without diving into at least one treat, then your willpower is definitely stronger than mine!

For me, it’s always the smell of roasted and candied nuts that gets me!

Weimar Christmas Market - Boy with Bratwurst

If you are looking for a local specialty to try in Weimar, then I would definitely recommend a Thรผringian bratwurst.

This local favourite is grilled to perfection and served in a crispy roll.

7. Admire the Giant Advent Calendar

One thing you don’t want to miss at the Weimar Christmas Market is the giant Advent calendar located on the front of the Rathaus.

Each day in December, a new window on the building is lit up, revealing festive artwork or decorations.

The whole facade of the Rathaus becomes part of the display, and itโ€™s a fun way to count down to Christmas.

Because we were in Weimar early in the month, we didn’t even realize that we were looking at an Advent Calendar at first.

But it really was very pretty.

If you’re looking for a quieter experience, visiting earlier in the day on weekdays is a good option too.

Early December, which was when we visited, is also a good time to go, as itโ€™s before the biggest crowds arrive closer to Christmas.

Are There Public Toilets at the Market?

Yes, there are public toilets available at the Weimar Christmas Market.

One of the public toilet locations that we saw was at Marienplatz, near the back of the market by the large fountain.

I am sure there are also public restrooms at the other locations. I just couldn’t tell you exactly where.

Keep in mind that the bathrooms are not free to use in Germany. You should always carry some small change for this very reason!

Final Thoughts

While we were only able to spend a couple of hours at the Weimar Christmas Market, we really enjoyed it.

We loved the Advent Calendar, the sound of the bells ringing, the intimate feel of the market, and of course, the food!

We can’t wait to go back someday and do it some proper justice!
