This awesome town is located near Stuttgart in southern Germany.
The market is held in several areas of the old town, including Marktplatz and Rathausplatz.
Esslingen’s gorgeous medieval buildings provide the perfect backdrop for this festive market.

About the Esslingen Christmas Market
The Esslingen Christmas Market is one of the most unique markets that we visited in Germany. And trust me, we went to A LOT!
It first opened in 1983 and is now one of the most visited markets in the region.
Over 200 stalls fill the streets each year, attracting about one million visitors annually.
What makes this market different from all the rest? Esslingen is a Medieval Christmas Market.
Yes… While other markets in Germany may have a small Medieval-themed section, Esslingen’s ENTIRE market has a Medieval theme.
You will find vendors in period costumes, and a variety of medieval-themed foods, rides for kids, activities, demonstrations, and stalls that sell traditional goods.
It really was a lot of fun!
What Are the Best Christmas Markets in Esslingen?
1. Traditional Christmas Market at Marktplatz
Marktplatz is home to Esslingen’s Traditional Christmas Market.
This is where you will find all the usual festive stalls selling holiday decorations, gifts, and seasonal food.
We found this area of the market to be a little on the small side, with only about 80 stalls, but it was still pretty awesome.
John and I enjoyed browsing through the small hut selling a variety of specialty liquors. They even offered samples so we could try them before we bought them.
The Eierlikör was my fave!
My daughter found a stall selling jewellery made from gemstones and polished rocks, which she goes nuts for. We lost here there for about 20 minutes!
But the one thing that you should definitely not miss is the stall selling “Poushe Strudel.” These were wonderful Bulgarian-style strudels made with phyllo dough rather than a heavier pastry.
Not only do they look (and smell) incredible, but the taste is out of this world! We took several flavours to go, as they are a little messy to eat.
2. Mittelaltermarkt
The Mittelaltermarkt, or Medieval Market, is what Esslingen is known for.
As I mentioned earlier, you may find small medieval markets all through Germany, but NOBODY does it better than Esslingen!
They are truly committed to the theme.
This Christmas Market features medieval-style stalls, performers in period costumes, and traditional goods.
You can see blacksmiths, glassblowers, and other artisans at work, making this market quite interesting to stroll through.
There are even medieval-style activities to try like archery and candle-making.
The Medieval Christmas Market in Esslingen is spread out across several areas of the town, each with its own distinct feel.
The main areas include:
Rathausplatz
Rathausplatz is the main area of Esslingen’s Medieval Christmas Market.
This square is home to the beautiful old town hall (Rathaus), with its gorgeous half-timbered architecture and incredible-sounding carillon.
With this amazing building as a backdrop, you really can’t help but be put in a festive mood!
During the Christmas market, Rathausplatz is home to a variety of themed stalls, medieval-style food and drink, and the giant Christmas tree.
There is also a stage where musicians and performers in period costumes regularly entertain the crowd with historical instruments and songs.
We enjoyed watching a flame-juggler while visiting this market!
You will also find craftsmen like blacksmiths, glass-blowers, and woodcarvers demonstrating their skills.
There was even a candle-making workshop going on during our visit.
We were surprised to find traditional medieval games and activities for both adults and children at Rathausplatz. So much fun!
Zwergenland
If you are visiting the Esslingen Christmas Market with kids, then you are in for a real treat!
Zwergenland is a special section of the market designed for children of all ages. Even my teens got excited when we arrived!
Zwergenland features puppet shows, storytelling sessions, and hands-on workshops where kids can create their own crafts.
But the huge draws are the Medieval-themed Ferris wheel and interactive games.
Trust me, the younger crowd will have a blast.
But my teens were more interested in the archery and catapult games! Set up like a fair, you buy tickets and then can play whichever games you want.
Hafenmarkt
The Hafenmarkt is the best place to grab a bite to eat or drink at the Esslingen Christmas Market.
If you are looking to sample local and medieval-inspired treats, you will not be disappointed!
I had the best Knödel (dumplings) there. They were absolutely delicious, and something I didn’t find at any other markets we visited.
Another food item that we found in this market was Stockbrot, which was bread baked on a stick.
You will also find more traditional fare like bratwurst, Glühwein, and roasted Maroni (chestnuts).
🍯 Pro Tip: Don’t forget to try the Honey Mead while visiting the Hafenmarkt. Honey mead, also called honey wine, is an alcoholic beverage made by fermenting honey mixed with water. It’s quite good!
But the Hafenmarkt is not just home to wonderful food. We also found stalls selling Medieval clothing and handmade goods, as well as live music.
And let’s not forget the Märchenzelt! This ‘fairytale tent’ located in the Hafenmarkt is home to daily programming for kids which includes puppet shows, story readings and more.
3. Weinachtsinsel at Fischbrunnenplatz
The Weihnachtsinsel (or Christmas Island) at Fischbrunnenplatz is a smaller but charming part of the Esslingen Christmas Market.
A little off the beaten path, it’s definitely a more peaceful corner of the market, with only a handful of cute little stalls.
Fischbrunnenplatz focuses on handmade goods and unique gifts that are sold by local artisans.
We really didn’t spend much time in this part of the market, but what made it special was the live nativity scene that was there. With real sheep and a donkey, it was something to see.
4. The Adventsmarkt (Weekends only)
The Adventsmarkt was one part of the Esslingen Christmas Market that we did not get to see.
Open only on Saturdays and Sundays (and we visited on a Tuesday), this market is home to just over 30 stalls offering a more traditional holiday market experience.
It’s located near the Fischbrunnenplatz and runs alongside the Medieval Christmas Market.
The Adventsmarkt is where you will find everything from handcrafted ornaments and knitted hats to specialty foods like gingerbread, honey, and cured meats.
Things to Do at the Esslingen Christmas Markets
The Esslingen Christmas Markets offer plenty of activities to get you into the holiday spirit. Here are some of the best things to do while you explore the markets:
1. Sip Warm Apfelgluhwein
Sipping warm Glühwein is a must at any German Christmas Market, and Esslingen is no exception.
This spiced mulled wine is served hot and is the perfect drink to keep you warm while you explore.
You’ll find Glühwein in both red and white varieties, as well as a non-alcoholic version (Kinderpusch).
But while in Esslingen, be sure to try the Apfelglühwein (apple Glühwein)!
Since there are plenty of apple orchards surrounding Esslingen, you will find many apple-flavoured treats in the market.
John thought it was absolutely delicious, almost like hard cider (I’m allergic to apples so I stuck to the regular Glühwein).
2. Enjoy Medieval Performances
As I mentioned earlier, you will find plenty of live performances throughout the Esslingen Christmas Market.
Not only will you find costumed performers, including jugglers and fire-eaters, but you will also find musicians playing historical instruments.
These live shows take place regularly at various spots, such as Rathausplatz and Hafenmarkt, and are pretty interesting to see.
3. Listen to the Carillons Chime in Rathausplatz
One of my favourite sounds (aside from waves on the beach and rustling leaves) is church bells ringing.
When I spent the summers in Stuttgart as a kid, we lived right across the street from a church. So my love of bells started pretty early.
In Esslingen, the carillon at the Old Town Hall (Altes Rathaus) chimes daily during the Christmas season.
The carillon plays several times throughout the day, typically in the morning, around noon, and in the evening.
The exact times can vary slightly, but it’s often around 11:00 AM, 12:00 PM, and 6:00 PM.
The chiming definitely adds a festive touch to the already beautiful atmosphere of the Christmas market.
4. Take a Spin on the Rides
As I mentioned earlier, the rides in Zwergenland are a must when visiting the market with kids.
While this market does not have a Riesenrad, you will find a quirky hand-operated Medieval-themed Ferris wheel and merry-go-round (also hand-operated).
An antique carousel can also be found in Marktplatz. The kids will love them!
Of course, kids can also enjoy puppet shows, craft workshops, and storytelling sessions designed just for them in Zwergenland.
5. Warm Up with Some Classic German Christmas Fare
We are a foodie family, so enjoying some classic German Christmas fare is a big part of any German Christmas Market!
A must-try is the classic Bratwurst, grilled to perfection and served in a bun with mustard or sauerkraut.
The kids usually crave a portion of Käsespätzle (German egg noodles smothered in cheese), or maybe some Lángos (a flat piece of fried dough that’s traditionally slathered in garlic and sour cream with cheese on top).
Of course, if you want a true Esslingen specialty, head to the Wildspezialitäten stall where you can’t miss the roasted wild boar or a gourmet venison dish.
While I like venison, I didn’t have the chance to try the wild boar.
6. Take Part in Medieval Games
In keeping with the medieval theme, the market offers some pretty cool themed games and activities for both adults and children.
Try your hand at archery, twirling ladder climbs, catapult target games, and other period-specific games.
We saw kids of all ages (including the kids-at-heart) enjoying the activities.
7. Indulge Your Sweet Tooth
The kids and I all have a sweet tooth, so we are always on the hunt for unique sweets to try.
In Esslingen, you’ll find traditional German treats like Lebkuchen (gingerbread)and Apfelstrudel.
However, I tend to seek out my favourite, a bag of candied nuts. I absolutely can’t resist their delicious aroma.
All in all, there’s no shortage of sweets to indulge in while you explore the market!
8. Shop for Christmas Gifts and Souvenirs
Shopping for Christmas gifts and souvenirs is one of the best parts of strolling through a Christmas Market.
I was really impressed by the number of stalls that we saw selling locally made goods (rather than many of the mass-produced items we saw being sold in Munich).
In Esslingen, we found local artisans selling unique pieces like hand-blown glass baubles, knit and woven clothing items, hand-carved wooden toys and decor, and of course, tons of sheepskin items in the Medieval Market.
We also noticed several stalls selling traditional Medieval outfits, which is something I didn’t see at any other market.
With so many stalls to browse, you’re sure to find something special for everyone on your list.
9. Admire the Christmas Pyramid
The Christmas pyramid in Marktplatz is a must-see German Christmas Market tradition.
These tall, wooden structures are decorated with holiday figures like angels or nativity scenes and are an iconic symbol of German Christmas markets.
Originally from the Erzgebirge region, they were used as decorations long before Christmas trees became common.
The pyramids, typically one per city, are beautifully illuminated and often feature a Glühwein stand at their base.
If you love their look, you can also buy smaller, table-sized versions that spin with the heat from tealights, available at every German Christmas Market.

How to Get to the Esslingen Christmas Market
Getting to the Esslingen Christmas Market is not very difficult, as the town is pretty well connected.
Here are the best ways to get there:
By Air
The nearest major airport is Stuttgart Airport (Flughafen Stuttgart), which is about 15 km (9 miles) from Esslingen.
From the airport, you can take a direct train to Esslingen, which takes around 20-25 minutes.
Taxis or rideshare services are available for a quicker but more expensive option.
By Public Transportation
Esslingen is well connected by public transportation, especially from nearby Stuttgart.
From Stuttgart Hauptbahnhof (Main Station), it’s a quick 15-minute ride on the S-Bahn (lines S1 or S2) directly to Esslingen.
Trains run frequently, making it a convenient option for day trips.
This was the option we went with, and it couldn’t have been simpler.
Buses also run frequently from various nearby towns.
Once you arrive in town, the Esslingen station is only a short walk from the Christmas market.
By Car
If you’re driving, Esslingen is easily accessible via the A8 Autobahn.
From Stuttgart, it’s about a 20-minute drive to Esslingen.
Keep in mind that the streets around the Christmas market may be busy, so plan for extra time.
Parking
Parking in Esslingen can be limited during the Christmas market season.
There are several parking garages available, including the Kesslerplatz and Parkhaus Altstadt garages, which are within walking distance of the market.
However, spaces fill up quickly, especially on weekends, so your best bet is to arrive early.
When is the Best Time to Visit the Christmas Market?
The best time to visit the Esslingen Christmas Market really depends on your preferences.
If you prefer a quieter experience, visiting early in the season, on weekdays and during the early afternoon or evening would be the most ideal.
At this time, the market is less crowded, making it easier to explore the stalls and enjoy all the activities without waiting in long lines.
This is also a great time for families with younger children (and those with strollers) to visit.
On the other hand, weekends, especially in the late afternoon and evening, are much busier.
While the lights and performances make things really festive during these hours, the crowds are also much larger.
We visited on a Tuesday afternoon. However, since it was the week before Christmas and one of the last days of the market, it was pretty busy.
Are There Public Toilets at the Market?
