About the Erfurt Christmas Market
The Erfurt Christmas Market first started in 1850, making it one of the oldest in Germany.
Over the years, it has grown significantly. Today, the market is home to approximately 200 stalls spread across Domplatz and nearby areas.
Every year, the Erfurt Christmas Market draws in around 2 million visitors, making it one of the most popular markets in the region.
The market is set against St. Mary’s Cathedral and St. Severus Church, giving it a grand and truly magical feel.
The giant Christmas tree, life-sized nativity scene, and traditional Thuringian Christmas pyramid act as centrepieces to this wonderful market.
Erfurt is also known for its delicious local specialties, like Thuringian bratwurst and stollen, which are must-tries at the market.
What Are the Best Christmas Markets in Erfurt?
As we mentioned above, Erfurt’s Christmas Market is spread across several key areas in the city, each offering a unique experience.
If you are arriving by train, it is easy enough to follow the main road from the train station to Domplatz.
Not only will you hit all three markets, but you will also get a chance to explore the shops and stalls that can be found along the way.
Here’s a quick look at what you’ll find in each market location.
Willy-Brandt-Platz
At Willy-Brandt-Platz, you’ll find a smaller but charming section of the Erfurt Christmas Market.
Located right in front of the main train station, this market welcomes visitors with a festive atmosphere.
This tiny market offers a variety of stalls selling the usual handcrafted gifts, local snacks, and warm drinks.
Maybe grab a Glühwein for the road!
The market at Willy-Brandt-Platz is a great first stop before heading to the larger main market.
Fischmarkt
Just a bit further along, you’ll find Fischmarkt.
This market is located right in front of the Rathaus (town hall).
The Rathaus is a gorgeous example of neo-Gothic architecture, that houses some pretty ornate murals.
In the square, you will also find the Römer statue, or “Roland” as the locals call him.
During Christmas, the market stalls here are decorated beautifully.
Again, you will find the stalls selling local artisanal products, food and drinks. You definitely won’t go hungry in Erfurt!
Just a quick tip – if you plan to spend a few days in Erfurt, you can quickly pop into the nearby tourist information office, which also sells tickets for local events.
Domplatz
Domplatz is the centrepiece of the Erfurt Christmas Market and the largest and most festive area.
This is where you will find the gorgeous cathedrals, the giant Christmas Tree, the lifesize Nativity and the Christmas Pyramid.
Domplatz is also home to the most stalls, offering everything from traditional Thuringian treats to handcrafted decorations.
For the kids, there are a few rides to choose from as well as a possible visit from St. Nicholas.
Things to Do at the Erfurt Christmas Market
The Erfurt Christmas Markets offer plenty of activities to get you into the holiday spirit. Here are some of the best things to do while you explore the markets:
1. Sip Warm Glühwein
You can’t visit a German Christmas Market without indulging in at least one cup of Glühwein!
Glühwein is a spiced mulled wine that is often available in either red or white wine variations.
We did find that the white wine version (my fave) is not available in every market, however.
Another great thing about purchasing a mug of Glühwein in the market is the collector mug it comes in. It’s a perfect souvenir!
If you want to keep the mug, which is dated and specific to each market, then just take it home! If not, return the mug to the stall for a refund of the small deposit (Pfand).
And if you don’t drink alcohol, the Kinderpunsch is quite nice as well! It’s all the spiced goodness, without the kick! Our kids loved it.
2. Take a Selfie with the Christmas Pyramid
The Christmas Pyramid is a staple at most German Christmas Markets, and Erfurt is no exception.
This towering pyramid, made up of several sections, is one of the main highlights at this Christmas Market.
Standing 12 meters tall, it was built in 2005 by the artisan woodworking company Gahlenz in the traditional Erzgebirge style.
Each of its five octagonal sections has its own theme and is edged with pillars and decorative fencing.
The pyramid showcases 30 life-size wooden figures and is absolutely incredible to look at.
Unlike most German Markets, Erfurt’s Christmas Pyramid is stand-alone and does not house the typical Glühwein Stand.
Taking the perfect Instagrammable photo is a must… or at the very least, take a selfie!
3. Shop for Unique Gifts and Souvenirs
You can’t visit a Christmas Market without doing a little shopping, even if it’s just browsing!
Not only are the stalls themselves gorgeous, but the vendors offer everything from handmade Christmas ornaments to wooden toys and other local products.
I always love to look at the Christmas ornaments. They make the perfect keepsake from the markets.
The kids usually look for a magnet to add to their collection.
Shopping in the Market is a great way to support small local vendors, and come home with a one-of-a-kind treasure.
4. Catch Live Performances
The sound of music, whether it’s a choir, church bells, or a brass band, always captures my attention at a Christmas Market.
If you are the same, then you will be happy to learn that the Erfurt Christmas Market is home to an outdoor stage.
Located in Domplatz right near the Ferris wheel, you can catch live performances throughout the market’s run.
From local choirs singing Christmas carols to traditional folk music and even brass bands, there’s always something adding to the holiday cheer.
The performances usually take place in the late afternoon and early evening, which of course, sets the perfect mood for sipping on Glühwein and exploring the stalls.
5. Admire the Cathedral Backdrop
The Erfurt Christmas Market wouldn’t be the same without the incredible backdrop of St. Mary’s Cathedral (also known as the Erfurt Cathedral) and St. Severus Church.
These two massive, gothic structures sit on higher ground and can be seen from all over the market.
In fact, St. Mary’s Cathedral is one of Erfurt’s most famous landmarks.
From its beautiful stained glass windows to the famous Gloriosa bell—one of the largest medieval bells in the world—it really is worth the climb up the many, many stairs to get there.
And don’t forget to grab a photo of the giant Advent Wreath as you head up the stairs!
If you’ve got some time, we would definitely recommend stepping inside the cathedral.
Not only can you see the incredible architecture up close, but during the market, there are often special services and events happening.
There is also a Christmas floral exhibition which takes place in the Felsenkeller (the cellar), below Erfurt Cathedral.
There you will find a gorgeous exhibition of festive flower arrangements created by florists from across Thuringia and all over Germany.
6. Marvel at the Gorgeous Nativity
The Christmas Nativity is an iconic fixture that you will find at EVERY German Christmas Market.
While this is the case, each market’s Nativity is different. They are all uniquely decorated, and come in different sizes, with some even having live animals as part of the scene.
In Erfurt, the Nativity is located in the centre of the market, next to the giant Christmas Tree.
It is made up of 14 hand-carved life-sized figures. They were absolutely exquisite!
This Nativity, which was carved in Oberammergau, was purchased by the Efurt Market in 1991 with the help of community donations.
After the market closes, it is moved into the cathedral, where it remains on display for the rest of the festive season.
7. Try Traditional German Food
If you can make it through a German Christmas Market without indulging in at least one treat, then I commend you on your willpower!
For me, it’s always the smell of roasted and candied nuts that gets me!
If you are looking for a local specialty to try, John definitely recommends a Thuringian bratwurst. This local favourite is grilled to perfection and served in a crispy roll.
Of course, the kids couldn’t resist what we Canadians call a ‘potato tornado’. In German, they are called ‘Spiralkartoffeln.’
These are basically spiralled potatoes on a stick, deep-fried and seasoned. Definitely delicious and seemed to be quite popular in this market.
8. Hit the Rides
If you’re visiting the Erfurt Christmas Market with kids or just want to have a little fun yourself, the rides are a great way to add some excitement to your visit.
The Riesenrad (giant Ferris wheel) is a must as it gives you amazing views of the market and the cathedral all lit up from above.
Definitely save this ride for after nightfall, as the city and market all lit up is truly spectacular to see!
For younger kids, there’s a double-decker carousel that’s always a hit. While it’s not as grand as the one the kids rode in Frankfurt, it’s still lovely.
There is also a miniature train ride and a smaller carousel-type ride for the much younger crowd.
And if you’re feeling a bit adventurous (or travelling with teens), you can also check out the bumper cars! Definitely not for me, but the kids loved it!
9. Sample Erfurt’s Iconic Schittchen
This is one thing that we regretfully missed out on. We had no idea that Erfurt is home to a delicacy known as Schittchen.
Schittchen is a type of festive bread that’s similar to stollen. It’s made with raisins, almonds, lemon, and brandy or rum, making it a delicious holiday treat.
You’ll find it at several bakery stalls around the market, and it’s perfect to enjoy with a cup of Glühwein or take home as a tasty souvenir.
One local mentioned to us that the city is trying to get a patent for the Erfurt Schittchen, just like Dresden’s Stollen.
Whether this is true or not, I have no idea. But give the Schittchen a try if you want to experience something truly local!
10. Fall in Love with a ‘Schneewittchen’
I definitely fell in love with the “Schneewittchen” (or ‘Snow White’) in Erfurt!
This drink is a must-try for anyone with a sweet tooth and was something I did not see at any other Christmas Market that we visited (and there were plenty).
It’s made by mixing red Glühwein with creamy white chocolate. It is then topped with a generous dollop of whipped cream.
Served hot, it’s the perfect drink to warm you up on a chilly winter evening, while at the same time, adding a fun twist to the classic Glühwein.
The combination of rich chocolate and spiced wine definitely makes it a unique treat.
While John preferred the Grog that he sampled, my daughter and I shared two cups of Schneewittchen over the time that we were strolling through the market!

We loved that its charming atmosphere felt authentic without being overly commercialized.
The market really did a good job of blending the old-world charm of Erfurt’s medieval streets with festive holiday vibes.

One of the main public toilet locations is on Domplatz, near the back of the market, close to the Erfurt Cathedral.
