Where is the Potsdam Christmas Market?

Not to be confused with the Potsdamer Platz Christmas Market in Berlin, the main Christmas Market in Potsdam is located in the center of the Old Town.

The market runs along Brandenburger Strasse, from Potsdam’s Brandenburg Gate at Luisenplatz all the way to Bassinplatz and the St Peter & Paul Cathedral.

This central location is very walkable, making it easy for you to explore the market in one day.

The other smaller markets located throughout Potsdam are just a short walk, or in some cases drive, away.

When is the Potsdam Christmas Market?

The main Potsdam Christmas Market typically runs from late November until the end of December.

The smaller markets will usually only run on certain weekends during Advent. Please check the websites for the individual markets’ dates and times.

About the Potsdam Christmas Market

The Potsdam Christmas Market, known as “Blauer Lichterglanz” (Blue Glow), has been welcoming visitors since it first opened in 2007.

With around 50 stalls, you will find a festive mix of handmade goods, holiday treats, and lovingly made gifts.

This relatively small market sees about 250,000 visitors annually. But as I mentioned above, don’t let its size deter you from visiting this hidden gem!

What Are the Best Christmas Markets in Potsdam?

Potsdam is home to several smaller Christmas markets spread across the city. Each of these markets has a different theme, so you may want to see them all!

Old Town Christmas Market – Blauer Lichterglanz

Potsdam’s main Christmas market is located along Brandenburger Strasse. Known for its blue-lit decorations, it features around 50 stalls with gifts, artisanal goods, and traditional treats.

This is the market that we visited during our brief time in Potsdam. We walked the full length of the market, shopped, tasted (many) treats, and had a blast!

We loved the more intimate feel of this market. You could tell that there were more locals there than tourists, giving it a hidden gem kind of vibe.

Sinterklaas Festival in the Dutch Quarter

With a Dutch theme, this market celebrates Potsdam’s historic ties with the Netherlands. You’ll find Dutch holiday treats and unique gifts, many with a focus on Sinterklaas traditions.

Potsdam Sternenmarkt

Located in the Kutschstallhof Am Neuer Markt, this market celebrates Polish holiday traditions. It’s the place to find Polish goods, foods like pierogi, and festive ornaments.

Romantic Christmas Village at Krongut Bornstedt

Set in a historic estate, this market has a bit of a medieval feel. Open fires and rustic stalls set the scene, and there’s live music, theatre performances, and plenty of traditional German food on offer.

Bohemian Christmas Market in Babelsberg

This market brings a Bohemian flair to the season, focusing on handmade goods and Czech specialties. It’s known for its community feel and is a favourite for unique gifts and regional dishes.

Christmas Market at Belvedere Palace

Held at the historic Belvedere on the Pfingstberg, this market offers a more intimate experience with a beautiful view of Potsdam. The market has fewer stalls, but they offer quality gifts, holiday foods, and hot drinks, all in a beautiful historic setting.

If you don’t want to go it alone, a Potsdam Christmas Market Tour is a great way to explore the city’s holiday highlights with a guide.

This three-hour guided walk begins at Brandenburg Gate and takes you along Brandenburger Strasse. Enjoy the festive decorations while browsing the market stalls.

The tour includes stops at St. Peter and Paul Cathedral and the Luisenplatz Christmas Market. It ends at Bassinplatz, where you can browse locally-made gifts and treats.

Things to Do at the Potsdam Christmas Markets

The Esslingen Christmas Markets offer plenty of activities to get you into the holiday spirit. Here are some of the best things to do while you explore the markets:

1. Sip Warm Glühwein

Indulging in a cup of warm Glühwein is a must at any German Christmas Market, and Potsdam is no exception.

This spiced mulled wine is served hot and is the perfect drink to keep you warm while you explore. This was especially true for the chilly and rainy night that we visited the market!

You’ll find Glühwein in both red and white varieties, as well as a non-alcoholic version (Kinderpusch).

Some markets will also offer flavoured Glühwein like apple or cherry. While we didn’t try them in Potsdam, we have sampled them in other markets. And they were delicious!

2. Take a Spin on the Riesenrad

The Riesenrad at the Potsdam Christmas Market is located in Bassinplatz.

Towering around 30 meters high, it provides incredible views over the festive stalls and surrounding lights.

In fact, you can see all the way to the Brandenburg Gate! Definitely not for the faint of heart!

The gondolas are fully enclosed, making it the perfect spot to warm up and rest for a few minutes!

3. Chat with the Talking Moose Head

One quirky highlight of the Potsdam Christmas Markets is the talking moose head.

We found him perched above one of the Glühwein stalls in the Blauer Lichterglanz market.

This animatronic moose moves its mouth and eyes, entertaining visitors with holiday greetings, jokes, and even the occasional song.

While he is pretty popular with families, I found it a little hard to understand what he was saying because of the noise of the crowd around the drink stand.

Of all the Christmas Markets we have visited, this was definitely a first!

4. Warm Up with Some Delicious Christmas Market Fare

For this foodie family, enjoying some classic German fare is where it’s at when visiting the Christmas Markets!

While in Potsdam, the kids decided to skip the classic Bratwurst and head straight for the Lángos (a flat piece of fried dough that’s traditionally slathered in garlic and sour cream with cheese on top).

You will find all kinds of foods at this market, even if you have a picky palate.

My favourite was the garlic bread. The smell of the roasting garlic had me following my nose until I finally found where the lovely aroma was coming from.

Laugh all you want, it was darn good!

And if you are visiting some of the smaller markets, be sure to try some of the international foods being served there like Polish Pierogi or Danish poffertjes.

5. Take a Selfie at Potsdam’s Brandenburg Gate

So Potsdam is home to its very own Brandenburg Gate.

Located in Luisenplatz and right next to the giant blue Christmas Tree, it makes the perfect backdrop for selfies.

The illuminated gate and surrounding holiday decor are pretty magical, especially beautiful in the evening.

But just a word of advice, head around to the other side of the Gate for the best photo opportunity. You can get the tree through the Gate’s arches for an awesome shot!

I dropped the photography ball on this one, as I was too occupied finding food for my starving teens!

6. Hit the Rides

If you have younger kids with you, then the rides at the Potsdam Christmas Markets will add some extra holiday fun for everyone.

From the vintage carousel at Blauer Lichterglanz to the Riesenrad at Bassinplatz, and even a few rides in between, the kids will have a blast.

We never saw a long line at the rides, so it would be the perfect way for the kiddos to take a break from shopping and enjoy the market.

7. Indulge Your Sweet Tooth

The kids and I all have a sweet tooth, so we are always on the hunt for unique sweets to try.

In Potsdam, you’ll find traditional German treats like Lebkuchen hearts or candied almonds. But you will also find some unique items.

We headed to a stand selling Muzen, simply because it had the longest line!

Muzen are little doughnut-like pastries that are served dusted with powdered sugar. We only saw them in a few markets throughout our travels.

They were delicious and definitely worth the wait!

For something unique, try Dutch poffertjes – tiny fluffy pancakes, served on a stick and covered in chocolate. Yummy!

8. Shop for Christmas Gifts and Souvenirs

I love to shop for Christmas gifts and souvenirs while strolling through a Christmas Market.

I was really impressed by the number of stalls that we saw selling locally made goods (rather than many of the mass-produced items we saw being sold in Munich).

Some stalls sell regional specialties like Potsdam honey, lavender sachets, and artisanal soaps.

It’s a great place to pick up quality, handmade items that make thoughtful gifts, all while supporting small local businesses.

9. Admire the Christmas Pyramid

The Christmas pyramid in Potsdam’s main market is a classic German tradition you won’t want to miss.

These tall, wooden structures are decorated with figures like angels or nativity scenes and are a staple at German Christmas markets.

Originally from the Erzgebirge region, they were used as holiday decorations even before Christmas trees.

Each city usually has one large pyramid, beautifully lit and often with a Glühwein stand at the base.

If you love the look, you can also buy smaller versions that spin with the heat from tealights – perfect souvenirs from the market.

If you’re arriving by air, the closest airport to Potsdam is Berlin Brandenburg Airport (BER). From the airport, you can reach Potsdam in about an hour

By Train

Take the regional train (RE1) from Berlin, which runs frequently and reaches Potsdam in about 25 minutes.

From Potsdam’s main station, you can either walk 15 minutes to Brandenburger Strasse or take a tram.

By Tram

Trams 91, 92, 93, 96, and 99 all stop near the market area.

The most convenient stop is Brandenburger Straße, which brings you close to the main Blauer Lichterglanz market.

If you’re driving to Potsdam, it’s straightforward from nearby cities like Berlin.

From Berlin, take the A115 autobahn (known as Avus) and follow signs for Potsdam. This route takes about 30 minutes, depending on traffic.

Coming from other regions, the A10 Berliner Ring encircles Berlin and connects with the A115, leading you directly to Potsdam.

Parking

If you’re driving, there are several parking garages in Potsdam’s city center, such as the one at Luisenplatz.

However, spaces fill quickly during the holiday season, so arriving early is recommended.
