And while we have visited Ludwigsburg many times before, this was our first time at the Christmas Market. And we loved it!

It’s pretty small when comparing it to the nearby Stuttgart Markets, but it had everything we could ask for.

From delicious foods to stalls selling gorgeous ornaments, rides for the kids, and some really nice cafes and boutiques nearby, there really is something for everyone.

Where is the Ludwigsburg Christmas Market?

The Ludwigsburg Christmas Market takes place at the Marktplatz or main square. It is only a short walk from the iconic Ludwigsburg Residential Palace.

This central location is not only easy to reach but very walkable, making it easy for you to explore the market in one day.

🎄 Insider’s Tip – Be sure to explore the pedestrian shopping area surrounding the market. You’ll not only find it to be filled with small boutiques and cafes, but the Christmas decorations are also pretty nice to see.

About the Ludwigsburg Baroque Christmas Market

Known as the Ludwigsburg Baroque Christmas Market, it features more than 175 stalls offering a variety of items, including holiday decorations, gifts, and regional foods.

We found it to be quite popular with the locals. And my friends, who live in the area, totally agree!

While the ambiance is similar to many other German Christmas Markets, the only thing that you won’t find elsewhere is the illuminated angel figures.

I thought that they were absolutely gorgeous, especially all lit up at night.

Things to Do at the Ludwigsburg Christmas Markets

The Ludwigsburg Christmas Markets offer plenty of activities to get you into the holiday spirit. Here are some of the best things to do while you explore the markets:

1. Sip Warm Glühwein

I love Glühwein. And I would say that trying some is an absolute must when visiting any German Christmas Market.

This spiced mulled wine is served hot and is the perfect drink to keep you warm while you explore the market.

This was especially true for the chilly and rainy night that we experienced while visiting Ludwigsburg.

But just a heads up, don’t try to find a Glühwein stand under a German Pyramid. Ludwisgburg was one of the few markets we went to that did not have one!

Most markets will also offer Glühwein in both red and white varieties, as well as a non-alcoholic version (Kinderpusch), or even a regional specialty.

In Ludwigsburg, I tried a drink called Wilde Hilde. This festive concoction was made from white Glühwein mixed with Eierlikör and topped with whipped cream.

Was it ever good!! And, it was also something that I didn’t see in other markets.

2. Take a Selfie with the Angels

As I mentioned earlier, Ludwigsburg’s Angels are just gorgeous.

No other German Christmas Market that we came across had anything like them.

If you wait until evening when the market lights come on, you will see just how spectacular they look, especially with the backdrop of the baroque churches.

If you are looking for that perfect photo for the ‘Gram, then this is definitely it!

3. Warm Up with Some Delicious Christmas Market Fare

For our family, visiting the Christmas Markets is all about the food!

Not only do we enjoy sampling the classic German fare (like pretzels!) that we can’t get back home, but we also enjoy trying new foods.

In Ludwigsburg, however, we did things a little differently! We enjoyed cake and coffee in our favourite bakery, Cafe Stuble Lutz, which is located right in Marktplatz (the best in town).

We then ventured into the actual market, where we enjoyed a festive dinner of bratwurst on a bun a little later. This is definitely a family favourite.

We also noticed plenty of stands selling a variety of other typical market offerings like Almpizza (pizza made with flatbread), Maroni (roasted chestnuts), and my favourite, schupfnudeln (egg noodles similar to gnocchi).

Whatever you are craving, you won’t have trouble finding something delicious at this market!

4. Hit the Rides

If you have younger kids with you, then the rides at the Ludwigsburg Christmas Markets will add some extra holiday fun for everyone.

From the vintage carousel to the mini Ferris wheel, the kids are sure to have a blast.

But just a heads up, there is no Riesenrad in Ludwigsburg. My kids were a little disappointed, as they were too big for the rides at this market.

On the plus side, there were never any long lines at the rides, at least during our visit. So it would be the perfect way for the kiddos to take a break from shopping and enjoy the market.

5. Admire the Nativity

As with all Christmas Markets in Germany, you will find a gorgeous Nativity scene.

The one in Ludwigsburg is located under the main Christmas tree in Marktplatz.

And while it may not be as big as some of the others we have seen, it was quite unique and very pretty to see.

6. Indulge Your Sweet Tooth

I have a pretty big sweet tooth, so I am always on the hunt for something new to taste.

In Ludwigsburg, you’ll find traditional German treats like Lebkuchen hearts, candy apples, specialty cookies, or candied almonds. But you will also find some unique items.

For instance, this was the first market where I found Bratäpfel, or baked apples. If I wasn’t allergic to apples, I definitely would have tried them!

The apple is hollowed in the centre, and filled with a festive jam, marzipan, and almonds. It is then baked and served with a vanilla sauce. Yum!

7. Shop for Christmas Gifts and Souvenirs

I definitely have a weakness for German Christmas ornaments, and Ludwigsburg did not disappoint!

We found a number of stalls selling really nice glass or wooden ornaments, as well as other Christmas decor like the giant stars I love so much.

I was pretty happy to see that many of the stalls were selling locally made goods like artisanal cheeses and warm woollen hats (rather than many of the mass-produced items we saw being sold in Munich).

But I think that the most unique item we saw being sold at this market was the giant puppets! They were gorgeous and funny-looking all at the same time.

All in all, Ludwigsburg is a great place to pick up quality, handmade items that make thoughtful gifts, all while supporting small local businesses.

8. Visit the Residential Palace

Ludwigsburg’s iconic Residential Palace is just a short walk from the Christmas Market.

And if you are staying in town for more than just one day, we would highly recommend a visit.

You can take a guided tour of the palace and learn about its incredible history, as well as explore the gardens and fountains.

Tours are available in English. While younger kids may not be interested in the historical aspect, there are tons of interesting items on display that may catch their eye.

At the very least, it’s easy just to walk to the palace and admire it all lit up at night (which is what we did).

Getting to the Ludwigsburg Christmas Markets is simple, especially if you are coming from Stuttgart like we were. Here are your options:

By Air

If you’re arriving by air, the closest airport to Ludwigsburg is Stuttgart Airport (STR). From the airport, you can reach Ludwigsburg in about 45 minutes.

By Train

Ludwigsburg is well-connected by regional and long-distance trains.

If you are coming from Stuttgart, take the S4 or S5 S-Bahn lines from the Hauptbahnhof (main train station) to Ludwigsburg station.

The journey takes about 15 minutes. From Ludwigsburg station, it’s a 10-minute walk to the Marktplatz.

By Car

Drive north on the B27.

The trip is approximately 30 minutes, depending on traffic. Parking is available near the market, but spaces can fill up quickly during peak times.

And just a heads up, one of my friends who lives in the city says it can be difficult to find parking, even on weekdays.

The week before Christmas is also busy, no matter what time of day you are there.
