About the Frankfurt Christmas Market

The Frankfurt Christmas Market is one of the oldest and largest in Germany, dating back to the 14th century.

With more than 200 stalls, it has grown into a major holiday attraction, drawing in a whopping 3 million visitors each year!

The market stretches across several key locations like Römerberg, Paulsplatz, Hauptwache, and Friedrich-Stoltze-Platz, each offering a different experience.

Frankfurt Christmas Market - Römerberg

It features a mix of classic German treats, unique gift items, and fun activities like the double-decker carousel.

Another unique part of the Frankfurt markets, and one of my favourite things to experience, is the coordinated ringing of the church bells.

Known as the Frankfurter Stadtgeläut, participating churches come together for the traditional ringing of the bells, creating an absolutely magnificent sound across the city.

What Are the Best Christmas Markets in Frankfurt?

As we mentioned above, Frankfurt’s Christmas Market is spread across several key areas in the city, each offering a unique experience. Here’s a quick look at what you’ll find in each market location.

Hauptwache

The Christmas Market at Hauptwache is smaller but no less festive.

Located in one of Frankfurt’s busiest shopping areas, this market is a convenient stop for anyone in the city center and is also right off the S-Bahn line.

Frankfurt Christmas Market - John eating Currywurst

This was actually our first stop in Frankfurt, and we loved it. It wasn’t too busy, and there were soooo many foods to try here!

We sampled everything from Currywurst to Flammlachs (grilled salmon), Bratwurst on a bun and Fleischspieße (grilled meat on a skewer) with a bun.

Frankfurt Christmas Market - Mini Train in Hauptwache

But my favourite was the Feuerzangenbowle. This was my first time trying this sweet mulled wine, and it was Dee-lish!

Aside from the many food and drink stalls, you will also find an awesome train ride for the kids, as well as stalls selling handcrafted items.

Roßmarkt

The Christmas Market at Roßmarkt is definitely less crowded than the other main markets, but there isn’t too much to see here either.

This is where we found Frankfurt’s Christmas Pyramid as well as several small rides for the kids.

Frankfurt Christmas Market - Me with Christmas Pyramid

Roßmarkt, just like the other markets, also has just a few stalls that sell a mix of handcrafted gifts, festive decorations, and seasonal treats.

There were plenty of options to find a warm drink in this section of the market, as well as quite a few tables to stand at while you enjoyed your drinks and treats.

Rosa Weihnacht Market on Friedrich-Stoltze-Platz

The Rosa Weihnacht Market, located in Friedrich-Stoltze-Platz, definitely adds a unique flair to the traditional Christmas market scene in Frankfurt.

Also known as the “Pink Christmas Market,” it’s part of the LGBTQ+ community’s festive celebration.

Frankfurt Christmas Market - Daughter with pink Christmas Tree

You really can’t miss it as it stands out with its pink decorations and lively, welcoming atmosphere.

The market offers a mix of quirky gifts, handcrafted items, and gourmet food stalls.

You’ll find everything from pink ornaments to specialty pink cocktails.

Frankfurt Christmas Market - Pink Market

While we did find it to be a smaller market compared to Römerberg and Paulsplatz, the bright pink decor, friendly vibe, and focus on inclusivity made it a must-visit.

Christmas Market in Paulsplatz

The Christmas Market in Paulsplatz is located just a short walk from Römerberg. It has a spacious layout and a wonderfully festive atmosphere.

Frankfurt Christmas Market - Paulsplatz at night

This area is home to many stalls offering handmade crafts, holiday decorations, and warm drinks like mulled wine.

Of course, the standout feature of the Paulsplatz market is the beautifully lit St. Paul’s Church.

Schneeballen at the Christmas Market

You’ll also find a variety of food options here, including traditional German sausages, Reibekuchen (potato pancakes), gingerbread, and Schneeballen.

Trying Reibekuchen (potato pancakes) is a must when in Frankfurt. But more on this later!

Lastly, and good to know, is that you will also find public restrooms in Paulsplatz.

Römerberg Christmas Market

The Römerberg Christmas Market is the heart of Frankfurt’s holiday celebrations and my favourite section of the market.

Located in the city’s historic old town, it’s surrounded by beautiful half-timbered houses that create a gorgeous (and very photogenic) backdrop for the festivities.

Frankfurt Christmas Market - Snowing over Römerberg

Römerberg is where you will find the iconic giant Christmas tree, the double-decker carousel, and a large Nativity Scene.

You will also find a wide variety of stalls offering handcrafted ornaments, wooden toys, and of course, a ton of local treats and dishes.

This is where I found the best Germknödel (more on this later) and the tastiest Eierpunsch.

Frankfurt Christmas Market - Germknödel

There is also traditional holiday music that fills the air, with performances held on the balcony of St. Nicholas Church.

We found this market to be extremely busy both day and night. However, when it started to lightly snow one evening while we were there, it was pure magic!

Mainkai

The Christmas Market at Mainkai runs along the river, offering beautiful views of the Main River and Frankfurt’s skyline.

It’s a much smaller, quieter market, perfect for a peaceful stroll away from the busier spots like Römerberg.

Frankfurt Christmas Market - Skyline and

At Mainkai, you’ll find a range of stalls selling festive snacks, mulled wine, and handmade crafts, all with the scenic backdrop of the water.

This is where we found a really cute covered stall where we could sit, grab a hot drink, and get out of the snow that was falling.

Frankfurt Christmas Market - Son drinking hot chocolate

The kids were able to sip on some of the best hot chocolate, while John and I indulged in, you guessed it, Glühwein!

Things to Do at the Frankfurt Christmas Markets

The Frankfurt Christmas Markets offer plenty of activities to get you into the holiday spirit. Here are some of the best things to do while you explore the markets:

1. Sip Warm Glühwein

Sipping warm Glühwein is a must at the Frankfurt Christmas Markets.

This spiced mulled wine is served hot and is the perfect drink to keep you warm while you explore.

You’ll find Glühwein in both red and white varieties. I love that it was served in festive mugs that you can keep as a souvenir for a small deposit.

Frankfurt Christmas Market - Barrel shaped Glühwein stand

For a stronger kick, try the “Glühwein mit Schuss,” which includes an extra shot of rum or brandy.

And, if you don’t drink alcohol, the Kinderpunsch offers all the warm flavours without the kick.

2. Ride the Carousel

The double-decker carousel at the Frankfurt Christmas Market was one of the most beautiful carousels that we saw during our travels through Germany.

Frankfurt-Christmas-Market-Snowing-over-Romerberg-carousel

This gorgeous two-story carousel, located in Römerberg, stands out for its beautifully crafted horses and carriages, decked out in intricate holiday decorations.

Our kids rode it a couple of times, preferring to sit on the stationary horses on the upper deck.

Frankfurt Christmas Market - Son riding upper level of carousel

They said that the views of the market from up there were awesome! I’ll take their word for it, as I would get motion sickness if I tried to ride it myself! Ha!

Day or night, this carousel is definitely a must-see!

3. Take a Selfie Under the Romerberg Christmas Tree

The Römerberg Christmas tree is the perfect spot to snap a selfie at the Frankfurt Christmas Market.

You will find the tree in the middle of the square, covered in lights and decorations. It is definitely the ultimate holiday backdrop.

Frankfurt Christmas Market - Daughter and Christmas tree in Römerberg

The tree was absolutely massive! And, it was completely gorgeous when lit at night, especially with lightly falling snow!

It’s also the best place to get that perfect photo for the ‘Gram, as the half-timbered houses add a little extra charm in the background.

4. Marvel at the Huge Nativity

The huge nativity scene in Römerberg is something you don’t want to miss when visiting the markets.

It’s a life-sized setup with beautifully carved figures of Mary, Joseph, and the baby Jesus, along with other familiar characters.

Frankfurt Christmas Market - Römerberg Nativity

You don’t need to be religious to admire the amazing detail in the wooden figures. It’s one of those spots that feels a bit quieter in the middle of all the holiday hustle.

5. Sample Some Honey Products at Wagner’s Honighaus

Wagner’s Honighaus is a popular spot at the Frankfurt Christmas Market for anyone interested in honey products.

Frankfurt Christmas Market - Wagners Honighaus

Located near the Hauptwache market, you’ll find a variety of items made from local honey, including jars of pure honey, beeswax candles, and honey-based skincare products.

You will also find a variety of liquers made with added honey.

Frankfurt Christmas Market - Beeswax Candles

Wagner’s even allows you to sample the different types of honey, as well as the alcohol, chocolates and nuts.

I ended up purchasing a small bottle of Eierlikör with honey. It was the best I have ever tasted!

6. Enjoy Some Classic German Christmas Fare

Enjoying some classic German Christmas fare is a big part of the Frankfurt Christmas Market experience. At least it was for our family!

Two favourites you shouldn’t miss are the Frankfurter Rindswurst and Reibekuchen.

Frankfurter Rindswurst

Frankfurter Rindswurst is a local specialty sausage made from beef.

It’s typically served with mustard and a side of bread, making it a warm and hearty snack while you stroll through the market.

Frankfurt Christmas Market - Meat being cooked over large grill

The smoky flavour and tender texture make it a crowd favourite. John absolutely devoured his!

Reibekuchen

Reibekuchen, or potato pancakes, are crispy on the outside and soft inside. They are a lot like North American hashbrowns (only way better!).

Reibekuchen are traditionally served with apple sauce or sour cream. But when you are in Frankfurt, you have to try them with the iconic green sauce.

Frankfurt Christmas Market - Potato pancakes

The sauce is a creamy blend of fresh herbs, yogurt, sour cream, and oil, which pairs perfectly with the potato pancakes. Did I mention it was delicious??

And you won’t find the green sauce in any other city!

Frankfurt Christmas Market - Daughter eating potato pancakes

The kids inhaled them! I think it’s one of the only foods (aside from my daily portion of Germknödel) that we had to buy several portions of.

7. Indulge Your Sweet Tooth

If you’ve got a sweet tooth, the Frankfurt Christmas Market has plenty to offer.

You’ll find traditional German treats like Lebkuchen (soft spiced gingerbread cookies often decorated with icing) and Bethmännchen, a Frankfurt specialty made from marzipan and almonds.

Frankfurt Christmas Market - Zimtsterne and marzipan

For something warm, grab a bag of roasted chestnuts or try my favourite, candied nuts, which absolutely fill the air with their delicious aroma. I swear I can’t walk by a stand without getting an instant craving!

And don’t miss out on Germknödel (another fave of mine), a fluffy steamed dumpling filled with fruit compote and served with vanilla sauce.

Frankfurt Christmas Market - Me eating a Germknödel

Frankfurt was the first place I tried this slice of heaven. And I have to say, they had the best!

All in all, there’s no shortage of sweets to indulge in while you explore the market!

8. Shop for Christmas Gifts and Souvenirs

Shopping for Christmas gifts and souvenirs is one of the best parts of strolling through a Christmas Market.

You’ll find all kinds of handcrafted items, from wooden toys and ornaments to cozy scarves and festive candles.

Frankfurt Christmas Market - Ceramic houses

Local artisans sell unique pieces like hand-blown glass decorations, intricate nutcrackers, blue and white pottery, and ceramic houses.

These all make for perfect gifts or keepsakes.

But one of the most unique things you will find in Frankfurt is the “Quetschemännchen.”

Frankfurt Christmas Market - Quetschemännchen

These small figurines are made from prunes and nuts and are traditionally given to someone you fancy. As the story goes, if they keep it, it is a sign that they fancy you as well!

With so many stalls to browse, you’re sure to find something special for everyone on your list.

9. Admire the Christmas Pyramid

The Christmas pyramid in the Roßmarkt is a German Christmas Market tradition you’ll want to check out.

These tall, wooden towers are decorated with holiday figures like angels or nativity scenes and are a big part of German Christmas culture.

Frankfurt Christmas Market - Christmas Pyramid in Roßmarkt

They originally came from the Erzgebirge region and were used as decorations long before Christmas trees became popular.

The pyramids (only one main one per city) are beautifully lit and are usually home to a Glühwein stand.

If you love the way they look, you can find table-size wooden versions that spin with the heat of burning tealights. They are sold in every German Christmas Market.
