Lucerne is known for its gorgeous setting with a stunning lake and mountains, its charming old town, and landmarks like the Chapel Bridge and the Lion Monument.

Lucerne is also famous for its cultural events like the Lucerne Festival, its interesting art scene, and delicious Swiss cuisine.

How Much Time Do You Need In Lucerne?

In our opinion, to really enjoy Lucerne without rushing, aim for two to three days.

This way, you have enough time to check out the main spots like the Chapel Bridge, the Old Town, and the Lion Monument without feeling hurried.

You can also spend a day exploring Mount Pilatus or another nearby mountain. If you’re around longer, consider a boat ride on Lake Lucerne or dropping by a museum.

But even if you’ve only got a day or two, you’ll still get a good taste of what makes Lucerne special.

Is Lucerne Walkable?

Yes, Lucerne is quite walkable! In fact, we left our car parked the first time we visited, and didn’t even have a car on subsequent visits.

The city center is compact, making it easy to explore the key attractions on foot.

We found that walking was a great way to experience the charm and details of Lucerne up close and at our own pace.

Plus, strolling along the lakefront or through the quaint streets offers some awesome views and photo opportunities.

What to Do in Lucerne?

1. Chapel Bridge (Kapellbrücke)

Explore this iconic wooden bridge, known for its history and gorgeous paintings.

It’s one of my favourite places to take photos in Lucerne.

2. Lake Lucerne

Enjoy a scenic boat cruise or relax by the lakeside.

Cruises can be fun at any time of the year, and a great way to see the town from another perspective.

3. Old Town

Stroll through the historic old town, admiring the well-preserved buildings and charming streets.

Be sure to head into the shops, sink your teeth in some Swiss chocolate, or enjoy an awesome cheese fondue for dinner.

4. Lion Monument

Visit the iconic and absolutely gorgeous sculpture commemorating Swiss Guards who were killed during the French Revolution.

This is my all-time favourite place to visit in Lucerne. There is just something about this sculpture that draws me back again and again.

5. Mount Pilatus

Take a cogwheel train or cable car up the mountain for jaw-dropping views of the surrounding mountains.

Have a bite to eat, sit and relax, or go for an invigorating hike. There is even a rope park and zipline if you want a bit of an adrenaline rush.

6. Lucerne Culture and Convention Centre (KKL)

Check out the incredible architecture at this concert hall.

And if you have some time, be sure to stay for a concert or performance.

7. Swiss Museum of Transport

Discover Switzerland’s transportation history, from trains to planes.

Be sure to head into the Swiss Chocolate Adventure Experience as well! It’s located right inside the Transport Museum.

8. Richard Wagner Museum

Explore the villa where the famous composer once lived.

It is now a museum dedicated to his life and work.

9. Musegg Wall

Walk along the ancient city wall and visit its towers.

Not only are the towers pretty cool to see, but we thought the views of Lucerne from the top were incredible too!

10. Glacier Garden (Gletschergarten)

See fascinating glacial potholes and learn about Lucerne’s natural history.

There is also a great mirror maze and cafe that would be fun for the kids.

Best Time To Visit Lucerne

The best time to visit Lucerne is during spring (April to June) for mild weather and fewer tourists.

Summer (July to August) is perfect for warm temperatures and outdoor activities.

We loved this time of the year as the city was in bloom and the lake was great for swimming.

Fall (September to October) is also great for less crowded sightseeing with pleasant weather.

While winter (November to March) is ideal for enjoying winter sports and festive holiday markets.

We loved our winter visit as well because we were able to enjoy the holiday lights and all the Christmas Markets.

It is provided for free by many hotels upon check-in. We were offered the card by the front desk staff, and it was explained to us.
