Located in north-central Switzerland, at the northwestern tip of Lake Zürich, this city is filled with amazing architecture, yummy treats, and lovely green spaces.

Not only is Zurich known for being the economic centre of Switzerland, but it is also one of Europe’s largest financial centres and the largest city in the country.

During our visit to Zurich, our family only had about 6 hours to spend in the city. While we could have definitely used more time, we enjoyed every minute that we had.

We were able to see many of the city’s popular attractions, enjoy some good food and stroll through its Old Town.

Whether you are headed to the city on a day trip, or as part of a road trip like we were, we can show you how to make the most of your time in Zurich with our one-day itinerary!

How to Spend 24 Hours in Zurich

1. Stroll Around the Old City (Altstadt)

One of our favourite ways to explore a new city is on foot, and we definitely enjoyed walking through Zurich’s Old Town (Altstadt).

It is so much easier to find hidden gems, interesting little cafes, or unique shops when you are strolling past rather than driving.

Zurich’s Altstadt is filled with cobblestone streets and buildings that have been standing for centuries.

I thought the architecture was gorgeous. That, coupled with the scenic Limmat River running right through the city, really made for some great photo opportunities.

🌐 Pro Tip: The official language of Zurich is German. But you will definitely notice that it is not standard German that is spoken! Instead, people in Zurich speak a Swiss German dialect.

And speaking of hidden gems, our favourite surprise during our stroll through the Altstadt was coming across the Napfbrunnen, hidden among the buildings in Napfplatz.

The original fountain was installed in 1568!

We learned that in1876 it was moved from its original location to the lower part of Napfplatz where it stands today.

I also learned that the original column and figure that adorned the fountain were damaged by the elements over the centuries, so they were removed.

They are now housed in the Swiss National Museum.

The current pillar and the sculpture, designed by Arnold Hünerwadel and Johann Riegendinger respectively, were installed successively in 1911 and 1937.

2. Learn Something New at the Swiss National Museum

At the Swiss National Museum in Zurich, we got a real taste of Swiss history and culture.

Housed in a castle-like building, this museum is packed with interesting exhibits that cover everything from Switzerland’s ancient past to modern times.

Walking through the museum, we saw all sorts of items: old armour, traditional outfits, and even some quirky everyday artifacts.

It was definitely interesting to see how people in Switzerland have lived through the ages.

Just a heads up, the place is pretty big, so there’s a lot to take in.

After exploring the inside, be sure to visit the museum’s garden. It’s a nice, quiet spot to take a break before moving on to the next attraction.

3. Enjoy the Views at the Lindenhof

Lindhof in Zurich is a great spot if you’re looking to see the city from above.

Located in the Old Town, this elevated area gives you a clear view of the river and key landmarks like the Grossmünster.

It surprised me to learn that this spot used to be a Roman fort, and has been a key spot for various events in Zurich’s history.

Nowadays, people come here to relax, play some chess on the public boards, or just take a break from walking around the city.

We found it to be a nice peaceful spot right in the middle of the city.

The views were awesome, so it’s also a great place to do some photography.

4. Shop Til You Drop on Bahnhofstrasse

Bahnhofstrasse in Zurich is the go-to spot if you’re up for some serious shopping.

Stretching from the Zurich main train station right down to Lake Zurich, this street is lined with everything from high-end designer stores to traditional Swiss shops.

What’s great about Bahnhofstrasse is the variety. The shops are a mix of luxury boutiques, department stores, and even some chocolatiers along the way.

So whether you’re looking for the latest fashion, unique jewelry, or just want to browse some Swiss watches and chocolates, there’s something for everyone.

And I’m not embarrassed to say, that we spent more time in the chocolate shops that in any other kind!

While Bahnhofstrasse is known for being one of the most expensive shopping streets in the world, don’t let that deter you.

Aside from the chocolate shops, we mostly just windowshopped. It’s also a prime spot for people-watching, which I love to do, and for picking up some small souvenirs.

5. Climb the Tower at Grossmünster

Climbing the tower at Grossmünster is a must when you’re in Zurich.

John and I have a thing for climbing these kind of towers, so we were all in! The Grossmünster’s tower has about 187 steps.

I’m not gonna lie, it’s a bit of a workout.

But having one of the best views of the city, the lake, and the surrounding Alps from the top is a fantastic reward for your effort.

But aside from the tower, the iconic Grossmünster is a church that is steeped in history.

It was actually a key site in the Swiss Reformation.

It’s a really nice church to walk through, and in our opinion, definitely worth a visit.

6. Take an Instagram-Worthy Photo at Fraumünster

The Fraumünster is one of Zurich’s most iconic churches.

It is known for its stunning stained glass windows created by Marc Chagall.

Located in the heart of the city, the church’s history dates back to the 9th century. And over the years, it has played a significant role in Zurich’s religious and social life.

When we stepped inside the Fraumünster, the first thing that caught our eye was the series of five windows by the choir section.

Each gorgeous window (designed by Chagall) depicts different biblical stories. But it’s the incredible colours that I couldn’t take my eyes off of.

There is a 5 CHF charge to get into Fraumünster, but that includes an audio guide as well as admission into the Crypt Museum.

7. Get a Kick Out of the FIFA Museum

The FIFA World Football Museum in Zurich is a must-visit for soccer fans.

Trust me when I say, there was no way for me to get out of this one! Our family is half German, half Italian, and completely obsessed with FIFA.

The museum is located just a short distance from the city center.

It offers an interactive and comprehensive look at the history of football, its cultural significance, and the FIFA World Cup.

Inside, you’ll find a ton of exhibits spread over three floors.

The exhibits showcase everything from the original World Cup trophy to jerseys, balls, and memorabilia from various tournaments.

I liked the fact that the museum doesn’t just focus on the artifacts, but also dives into the stories, emotions, and moments that have defined football over the years.

One of the highlights is the World Cup Gallery. There, you can relive the excitement of past tournaments and learn about the legends of the game.

There was also an interactive section where John and our youngest son tested their football skills and knowledge.

While it was a lot of fun to visit, it really didn’t take a lot of time. I think we were in the FIFA museum for just over an hour and were able to see everything.

8. Take a Cruise on Lake Zürich

Taking a cruise on Lake Zurich is a fantastic way to see the city and its surrounding areas from a fresh perspective.

We enjoyed our cruise in Lucerne so much, that we wanted to make sure that we took one in Zurich as well.

The cruises range from short one-hour trips to longer journeys that can take you to the far ends of the lake.

So if you have a bit longer to spend in Zurich, there are plenty of options depending on your schedule and interests.

While on board, we were able to relax on the deck, soak up the sun, and enjoy a drink while taking in the gorgeous Swiss scenery.

A cruise on Lake Zurich is perfect for a romantic outing, a family adventure, or simply a peaceful way to unwind at the end of a long day of sightseeing.

Of course, you could always opt for a hop-on hop-off cruise as well.

In this scenario, you could start your day on a river cruise and use it to get you around the city.

For 4.40 CHF (free with a Zurich Card), you could potentially see all of Zurich in a day.

9. Catch a Show at the Zürich Opera House

The Zurich Opera House is a gorgeous piece of architecture and a cultural gem.

Known for its world-class performances, the Opera House offers an awesome program that includes opera, ballet, and classical concerts.

This historic venue originally opened in 1891.

Today, it boasts an opulent interior that combines traditional design with state-of-the-art acoustics, providing an immersive experience for its audiences.

Even if you are new to the opera scene, attending a performance here will definitely be a memorable experience.

Even if you’re not attending a show, the building itself is worth admiring.

The exterior, with its neo-baroque facade, is absolutely stunning.

You can even take a guided tour if you are interested in exploring the interior and learning about the history and workings of the opera house.

How to Get to Zurich

Getting to Zurich is straightforward, thanks to Switzerland’s efficient and well-connected transportation network.

Whether you’re coming in by air, train, or road, here’s how you can easily reach this incredible city:

By Air

Fly into Zurich Airport (ZRH), a major international hub.
The airport is just 10 kilometres from the city center.
Utilize trains, trams, or taxis for a quick 10-15 minute journey to downtown Zurich.
✅ Tip: Check for direct train services from the airport to other Swiss cities if Zurich is your entry point to Switzerland.

By Train

The Zurich main Station (Hauptbahnhof) is a key European railway hub.
Direct trains connect Zurich with major cities like Paris, Milan, and Berlin.
We took the Train from Lucerne to Zurich to catch a flight, and it couldn’t have been easier (aside from the last-minute cancellation which almost caused us to be late… but that’s another story!)
✅ Tip: Consider a Swiss Travel Pass for unlimited travel if you’re exploring more of Switzerland by train (more on this below).

By Car

Zurich is well-connected by highways if you’re coming from neighbouring countries.
Be prepared for parking to be pricey and in high demand in the city center.
Remember, Swiss motorways require a vignette (toll sticker). These can be purchased at filling stations, post offices, and customs posts at the border.
✅ Tip: Use park-and-ride facilities on the outskirts and take public transportation into the city.

🚨 Pro Tip: When you rent a car in Switzerland, it’s typically equipped with a vignette. However, since we picked up our car in Germany, we had to buy a vignette at the border. We did see several people getting stopped by police right past the customs office, so we’d advise against risking it by not getting a vignette!

By Bus

Economical bus services link Zurich with various European cities.
Buses typically arrive at the main bus station, close to the city center.
✅ Tip: Buses can be a cost-effective alternative, especially for travel from nearby countries.

Swiss Travel Pass

The Swiss Travel Pass is an excellent option if you are planning to explore more than just Zurich.

This all-in-one ticket grants you unlimited travel on Switzerland’s amazing and extensive public transportation network, including trains, buses, boats, and even some cable cars and mountain railways.

It’s the best way to explore Switzerland, offering flexibility and convenience for your itinerary.

The Zurich Card is an awesome tool if you are looking to explore the city with ease and efficiency.

Much like the Swiss Travel Pass, the Zurich Card offers unlimited travel on public transportation within Zurich and its surrounding areas.

This includes trams, buses, trains, and even the cableways and ferry rides on Lake Zurich.

Beyond transportation, the card provides free or discounted access to many of the city’s museums, along with special offers at select restaurants and shops.

Getting Around Zurich

We must say that navigating Zurich was relatively straightforward, thanks to its compact size and efficient public transportation system.

Here are some tips and insights on how to get around Zurich, so that you and your family can explore the city with ease:

Walking

We found that many of Zurich’s attractions were easily within walking distance of each other, especially in the Old Town (Altstadt).

In fact, we prefer to walk when possible, as it’s a great way to explore a new city at your own pace.

It also allows you to discover hidden gems that you may not have noticed when taking a bus or tram.

Bicycles

We would definitely say that Zurich is a bike-friendly city.

The city has dedicated lanes and bike rental services like Züri Rollt, which offers free bike rentals at several locations.

While we didn’t have time to rent bikes during our visit, we have done it in other cities and it has been lots of fun. The kids really like it too.

Trams and Busses

Zurich’s tram and bus network is pretty extensive, covering nearly every corner of the city.

We found them to be reliable, frequent, and easy to use.

And judging by the amount of people who use them, they are quite a popular choice for both locals and visitors.

You will find that tram stops and bus stations are well-marked and display real-time schedules.

Trains

The S-Bahn (suburban train) network will easily get you around the city.

It’s a great option for getting to attractions that are further apart, or when you are in a hurry.

Boat

For a unique way to get around Zurich, you might want to consider taking a boat!

Boat rides are available on Lake Zurich or the Limmat River. You can even use your Zurich Card or your Swiss Travel Pass to access many of the boats.

It’s not only the perfect way to get from point A to point B, but it’s relaxing and you get to see the city from a totally different perspective.

Car

While driving in Zurich is possible, we would not recommend it.

During our road trip through Switzerland, we decided to rent a car, because we would be going to remote areas.

This wasn’t always great when we entered the larger cities though.

We arrived in Zurich’s city center early in the day, and the traffic was a nightmare.

We also had a pretty difficult time finding parking near to where we wanted to go. At one point, we just gave up, found a remote spot, and just walked to the attraction.

That said, the convenience of being able to travel where and when we wanted outside the city, outweighed the parking issues.

Travel Tips for Using Public Transportation

Here are just some final tips for using public transportation in Zurich, that we learned during our visit:

Use the ZVV app or SBB Mobile app for real-time schedules, route planning, and ticket purchases.
Always check the zone map when buying tickets, as Zurich’s public transportation is zone-based.
If you’re staying for a few days, look into day passes or multi-day tickets for cost savings on public transport.

Best Time to Visit Zurich

The best time to visit Zurich really depends on what you are interested in doing and your preference for the weather.

We have only visited the city in summer, so we don’t have any first-hand experience of what Zurich is like during the rest of the year.

Here’s a breakdown of what to expect weather-wise during different seasons:

Fall (September to November)

Weather: Mild, with temperatures from 8°C to 15°C, as the city showcases its gorgeous autumn colours.
Pros: Great for enjoying colourful foliage and wine festivals.
Cons: Days get shorter and cooler, especially towards November.
