A boat cruise on Lake Lucerne offers a wide range of cruise experiences.
You can opt for a short round trip, which is perfect for families with young children or anyone looking for a quick getaway. These cruises typically last about an hour, and go all year long.
For a more extensive exploration of the lake area, consider the full day tour that take several hours.
We did one of these tour in the summer and it was awesome!
If you’re interested in combining dinner with your scenic exploration, dinner cruises are available as well.
These are a great way to end the evening, lasting around three hours, and offer a meal alongside stunning views of the lake.
All cruises start and end at easily accessible points around the lake, making them convenient for a day trip.

The mountain is also home to the world’s steepest cogwheel railway, which is an experience in itself.
During winter, Pilatus becomes a winter wonderland, offering snowshoeing, skiing and sledding opportunities.
The best time to visit Mount Pilatus depends on what you want to do. Summer offers clear hiking weather and full access to all facilities, while winter provides a snowy escape with fewer crowds.

3. Mount Titlis and Engelberg
Mount Titlis and the nearby town of Engelberg are excellent destinations for a day trip from Lucerne.
The journey to Engelberg takes about 45 minutes by train, and from there, you can catch a cable car up to Mount Titlis.
Mount Titlis is known for its gorgeous mountain views and year-round snow.
One of the highlights is the Titlis Rotair, the world’s first revolving cable car, which offers a 360-degree view as you ascend to the summit.
Once at the top, you can step out onto the Titlis Cliff Walk, Europe’s highest suspension bridge, for a thrilling view over the abyss. Its not for the faint of heart though!
If you are into snow activities, Mount Titlis offers skiing, snowboarding, and sledding opportunities even in the summer, thanks to its high altitude.
There’s also the Ice Flyer chairlift, which takes you over the glacier, giving you close-up views of deep crevasses and gigantic ice formations.
Back down in Engelberg, this charming town offers a more relaxed pace.
We enjoyed strolling around its quaint streets. Be sure to stop by the impressive Engelberg Abbey, a working Benedictine monastery known for its cheese.
The town is also a starting point for various hiking trails. You have the choice of leisurely walks or even a more challenging hike, so something for everyone.
Besides outdoor adventures, you can enjoy local dining in Engelberg, with several restaurants serving traditional Swiss dishes like raclette and fondue, perfect for refueling after a day in the mountains.
I have never had better raclette than the one we tried in Engelberg. It was to die for!

4. Mount Stanserhorn
Mount Stanserhorn is another fantastic day trip destination from Lucerne, offering unique attractions and gorgeous views.
One of the highlights of Stanserhorn is the CabriO cable car, the world’s first double-decker open-top cable car.
We definitely thought this was a fun way to get to the to the summit! The unobstructed views were incredible.
At the peak, you can stroll along the Stanserhorn’s circular walkway. The trail offers a 360-degree views of the Swiss Alps.
The easily-accessible summit is particularly famous for its clear views of ten lakes, the Black Forest, and even the Alsace.
While you are enjoying the awesome views, Stanserhorn is also home to a marmot park, a revolving restaurant, and some hiking trails.
Mount Stanserhorn can be enjoyed from spring to autumn, but the cable cars close down for the winter.

5. Bern
Bern makes for a fantastic day trip from Lucerne. It’s about an hour’s train ride away, which is really convenient.
Bern is the capital of Switzerland. I’s surprisingly laid-back and not too crowded, which makes it great for a leisurely day out.
One of the best things about visiting Bern is its old town, which is a UNESCO World Heritage site.
The streets are lined with medieval buildings, gorgeous fountains, and a wonderful shopping arcade.
A must-see is the Zytglogge, an ancient clock tower with moving figures that perform a few minutes before the hour strikes.
Another great spot is the Bear Park, where you can see Bern’s live mascots in a large, riverside enclosure. It’s a nice place to take kids or just enjoy a moment outdoors.
For a bit of culture, check out the Bern Museum of Art. It has a mix of classical and contemporary art, and it’s not too big, so you can explore it without feeling overwhelmed.
Lastly, don’t miss out on walking along the Aare River. If the weather’s good, it’s a beautiful place for a stroll or even a dip if you’re feeling adventurous.

Once you’re up at Jungfraujoch, you’re treated to breathtaking views of the Aletsch Glacier, which is the longest glacier in the Alps.
For activities, there’s plenty to do. You can visit the Ice Palace, a collection of ice sculptures and tunnels carved into the glacier.
Honestly, it’s a fun and unique experience walking through this frozen gallery.
If you love the outdoors, you can enjoy the Snow Fun Park, where you can try snow tubing, skiing, or snowboarding, even in the summer.
If you’re not into snow sports, just taking a walk on the observation deck. The views of the surrounding peaks like the Eiger, Mönch, and Jungfrau absolutely jaw-dropping
Lastly, the Sphinx Observatory is one of the highest astronomical observatories in the world.

Once you’re up on Mount Rigi, there’s plenty to do. The awesome views are definitely a highlight, providing a stunning 360-degree look at the surrounding lakes and peaks.
This is definitely the perfect spot to take some photos for the ‘Gram!
If you enjoy hiking as much as we do, there are a number of well-marked in various lengths, so you can choose one that suits your time and fitness level.
If you’re not much of a hiker, you can still enjoy the scenery from one of the restaurants or terraces available at the top.
These spots offer great spots to relax and take in the view while enjoying some local cuisine.
In winter, Mount Rigi transforms into a winter sports hub with options for skiing, snowboarding, and sledding, making it a year-round destination.

Paragliding and skydiving are incredibly popular here, offering adrenaline-pumping thrills along with some of the best aerial views of the Swiss Alps.
If you prefer something a bit more grounded, you can try out kayaking or paddleboarding on either of the crystal-clear lakes.
For a more relaxed experience, take a leisurely cruise on Lake Thun or Lake Brienz.
These cruises provide awesome views of the mountains and are a perfect way to relax after an adventurous day in the region.

Trust me when I say, it’s a little bit offbeat but definitely worth a visit.
If you’re looking to relax, the lakeside area of Ouchy offers beautiful gardens and promenades where you can enjoy a peaceful walk or just sit and look out over Lake Geneva.
Lausanne is also a great spot to hop on a boat and take a short cruise on the lake.

One of my favourite things about Basel, is that it offers some unique culinary experiences. This is because the town sits at the crossroads of Switzerland, France, and Germany.
Be sure to try some local treats like Basler Läckerli (spicy gingerbread cookies) or a meal at one of the riverside restaurants for a taste of regional flavors.
