Arriving at Mount Stanserhorn
Once you arrive at the base of Mt Stanserhorn, this is when the fun begins!
Tickets
As far as ticket options go, you can get a round-trip fare or a one-way ticket.
In 2024, a roundtrip ticket will cost you CH 82.00 for adults and CH 20.50 for kids up to 16 years of age.
This fare includes a free boarding pass which allows you to choose your boarding times in advance. This makes sense if you want to avoid waiting in long lines during peak times.
You can also choose to purchase a one-way fare for CH 41.00.

Just be forewarnedโฆ if you decide to hike to the top, you will need a minimum of 4 hours, with travel over a steep and narrow path.
We saw more people choosing to make the trek downhill, to be honest!
Just a heads up, if you are travelling with a dog that is larger than 30cm, you will need to purchase a fare for your furry friend as well! The cost is CH 20.50 for a round-trip ticket.
The Drahtseilbahn
If you decide to ride to the top of Mt Stanserhorn (which is exactly what we did), your first step on the journey to the summit will be aboard the Drahtseilbahn, or Old Timer Funicular Train.

Built in 1893, the train originally consisted of 3 sections of track to reach the top of the mountain.
In 2009, the bottom portion was restored and is the only one that is still in operation today. The middle and top portions were replaced by the CabriO Cable Car in 1975.

At 450m above sea level, the Drahtseilbahn connects the Stans station to the Kรคlti intermediate station located at 710m above sea level.
The distance between the two stations is 1550m and takes approximately 10 minutes.
The CabriO
The second portion of your ascent up the mountain is onboard the CabriO.
The CabriO cable car is the worldโs first cable car to offer a roofless upper deck.
When you pair that with a lower level that is almost completely wrapped in windows, what more could you ask for?
Trust me when I tell you, the 360-degree panoramic views were absolutely breathtaking!

We spent most of our ride to the top outside, on the observation deck.
We had a super clear day, so the views were incredible, as was the fresh mountain air!
The ride from the Kรคlti intermediate station to the top takes just under 10 minutes, with the cable car travelling at approximately 8 meters per second.
In total, you can expect your travel time from the Stans base station to the top of Mount Stanserhorn to take approximately 25 minutes.
What to Do at Mount Stanserhorn
Once you arrive at the top of Mount Stanserhorn, you have plenty of options to keep busy.
1. Walk the Panorama Trail to the Summit
Once you leave the cable car, there is a walking loop that takes you around the summit. Or if you prefer, you can continue to the peak.
The Panorama Trail is approximately 1.5 kilometres (about 0.93 miles) long, and we found it to be quite easy to navigate.

This awesome trail offers a 360-degree view of the Swiss Alps and surrounding landscapes, and only takes about 30 minutes to complete.
Along the way, you’ll see informational panels about the local flora and fauna, as well as the marmot habitat (more on that later).
2. Enjoy the Jaw-Dropping Scenery at the Viewpoints
At 6,227ft, the peak offers amazing views on a clear day, which is exactly what we had!
From the viewpoints, you will have 360-degree views and will be able to see up to 100 kilometres away!

Not only were we able to see a total of 10 different lakes from our vantage point, but we were also able to see the Black Forest in Germany.
Amazing! Just make sure you bring a sweater. Even on the warmest day, it gets a little breezy up there!
๐ค Pro Tip: You will usually find a Stanserhorn Ranger near the peak. These extremely knowledgeable volunteers will help you identify what lake you are looking at, what birds you see nesting, which direction to look in to see France, or even what the best dish is in the revolving restaurant.
3. Take a Cheesy Tourist Photo
One of our family’s favourite things to do when the kids were young, was to take funny, or what we call ‘cheesy’, tourist photos.
And Mount Stanserhorn did not disappoint! Along the Panorama Trail, you will find a few different cutout signs, where you can pop your head in for a silly photo.

There are also a few statues and carvings that are pretty interesting to look at along the trail.
And considering that we had to wait in line for our turn, it’s not only our family that enjoys these humorous photo opportunities!
4. Visit the Cute Marmots
Another interesting thing that you will find while walking along the Panorama Trail, is the Marmot sanctuary.
I have to say, this was totally unexpected. And I am pretty sure that this was the first time that any of us has ever laid eyes on a marmot!

If you have never seen one before, these cute creatures look a lot like a groundhog.
The sanctuary not only gives you the opportunity to watch these animals up close, but provides information about the marmots’ lifestyle, behaviour, and habitat.
We thought it was pretty interesting.
๐ฎ Fun Fact: Alpine Marmots are the second-largest rodents in Switzerland after beavers. They can be found in the Swiss Alps between 2,500 and 10,000 feet in elevation. They are able to dig through soil that even a pickaxe would have difficulty with.
5. Sample Swiss Cuisine at the Rondorama Rotating Restaurant
Imagine enjoying your delicious Swiss cuisine with gorgeous 360-degree views as the restaurant gently rotates.
The Rondorama Rotating Restaurant on Mount Stanserhorn definitely offers a pretty unique dining experience.

This self-serve restaurant is open daily for breakfast and lunch, with hot items provided after 11 am. Dinners are available on Thursday through Saturday.
If you do decide to stop in for a bite, we recommend the Alpine Maccaronis. Not only was it made from all local ingredients, it was to die for!
๐ฅ Fun Fact: The restaurant takes 43 minutes to complete a full rotation.
6. Go for a Scenic Hike
Aside from the Panorama Trail, Mount Stanserhorn also offers several hiking opportunities for those with more moderate skills.
While we weren’t prepared for a long hike during our visit, there are a few trails leading up to the Stanserhorn from the valley that we would consider a challenge.
These hikes are a bit demanding, take several hours to complete, and are more suitable for intermediate hikers.

We saw plenty of people on the trails while we were riding the cable car up the mountain!
There are also various hiking paths connecting the Stanserhorn with neighbouring mountains or valleys.
These offer longer and more strenuous options for experienced hikers, vary in length and difficulty, and provide options for half-day or full-day hikes.
7. Take a Break in the ‘Lazy Zone‘
We found it quite funny to find a designated ‘Lazy Zone” on Mount Stanserhorn!
According to the signage, the Stanserhorn was nicknamed the ‘Lazy Mountain’ back in 2006, by the “Club of Leading Lazy People”!
Trust me, I am not making this up!

In the Lazy Zone, you’ll find comfortable lounging chairs and benches offering some of the best views of the surrounding mountains and valleys.
It’s a bit more sheltered from the wind than the peak, so it was the perfect place for us to soak up some sun, enjoy a drink, and be – Lazy! ๐
8. Have a Picnic
Having a mountaintop picnic would be a really great way to enjoy the incredible views while spending the afternoon with family.
We noticed several picnic tables and even two barbeque areas while visiting.

One area was on the way towards the summit and the other was below the terrace (picnic area).
You will even find firewood available at both barbecue areas.
9. Take Part in a Special Event
If you do your research ahead of time, you can time your visit to Mount Stanserhorn with a special event that is going on.

From Candlelight Dinners at the Rondorama Restaurant to mountain yoga, Chasing Stars night photography workshops, traditional Swiss Tracht (dress) days, or even mountain running programs, there are plenty of interesting events to participate in.
10. Test your Courage Paragliding
While we were visiting Mount Stanserhorn, we had the opportunity to watch several people hang-gliding and paragliding from the mountain.
It definitely looked cool and like something we would want to try.
There are several companies in the Stans and Lake Lucerne area that provide this adventure.

These operators typically offer tandem flights, where you’re accompanied by an experienced pilot, perfect for first-timers.
Prices for a tandem flight can vary, generally ranging between CHF 150 to CHF 250, and often include options for photos or videos to capture your experience.
A standard flight lasts about 20 to 60 minutes, giving you plenty of time to soak in the gorgeous scenery as you glide through the air.
