We absolutely loved it and would definitely recommend that you visit at least once.

YES! Switzerland is definitely worth visiting.
From the amazing scenery to the museums, hiking trails, and delicious chocolate and cheese (we said it before and we will say it again!), there are a lot of incredible things that this country has to offer.
We would absolutely recommend adding Switzerland to your itinerary, whether you are travelling as a family, a couple, or even as a solo female traveller.
15 Reasons to Visit Switzerland
There are plenty of reasons why we have gone back to Switzerland several times, and why we would recommend adding it to your travel itinerary:
1. The Jaw-Dropping Scenery
One of the biggest reasons that we love Switzerland, is the gorgeous scenery.
Whether you’re into hiking, skiing, photography, or just love being out in nature, Switzerland’s Alps, lakes, and forests provide a perfect setting.
We also loved admiring the charming hillside towns and the cute architecture during our road trips. Many looked like they were straight out of a fairytale book.
2. It’s Easy to Get Around
Getting around in Switzerland is a breeze.
The public transportation system is top-notch, with trains, buses, and boats that are punctual and connect even the most remote areas.
Whether you’re heading up a mountain or travelling between cities, you can rely on public transit to be efficient and user-friendly.
And while we mainly relied on a car, because we were road-tripping, when we did have to use the trains, they were easy enough to navigate.

3. The Delicious Chocolate
As a self-proclaimed chocoholic, you will only get a very biased opinion out of me. The chocolate is to die for!
Don’t believe me? Swiss chocolate is known worldwide for its quality and taste.
The chocolate is smooth, rich, and just melts in your mouth. Whether you’re into milk or dark chocolate, there’s something for everyone.
Plus, visiting local chocolatiers or chocolate factories can be a unique experience where you can see how it’s made and try some fresh samples.

4. The Fabulous Mountains
The mountains in Switzerland are truly fabulous.
With some of the most iconic and breathtaking peaks in the world, there is just no excuse not to get out and explore them.
Whether you’re looking to ski or snowboard on world-class slopes in the winter or hike through scenic trails in the summer, the Swiss mountains offer year-round adventures.
Having visited both Mount Stanserhorn and Mount Pilatus, we speak from experience when we say that the views are spectacular!
And you don’t have to be into outdoor sports to enjoy the mountains.
With many world-class cable cars and an iconic cogwheel train, hitting the peaks in Switzerland is an easy adventure for the whole family.
5. Incredible Hiking Trails
If you love hiking as much as we do, then Switzerland’s trails are definitely worth hitting.
They cater to all levels, from leisurely walks to challenging treks. Most of the trails we explored were well-marked, and take you through some pretty stunning landscapes.
What’s great is that you can find trails everywhere. So no matter where you are in Switzerland, a good hike is never far away.
Plus, the views you get while hiking are unbeatable—you’re often treated to gorgeous scenes that look like they’re straight out of a travel magazine.
6. Taste All the Cheese and Fondue
Switzerland is a paradise for cheese lovers (like me).
The country takes its cheese seriously, offering a variety that’s hard to find anywhere else.
Swiss fondue is definitely a must-try. Fondue is basically a meal where you dip cubes of bread into yummy melted cheese. Deelish!
Then there’s raclette. This cheesy delight is where you melt cheese and scrape it over potatoes or vegetables. What could be better?
Whether you’re enjoying a meal in a mountain chalet or a city restaurant, the quality of the cheese is top-notch, and a must-try experience.
7. To Find the Perfect Watch
There is no denying that Switzerland is synonymous with watchmaking excellence.
The country’s reputation for crafting the perfect watch is unparalleled. And it’s no secret that the watches reflect a tradition of precision, quality, and innovation.
Whether you’re looking for a luxurious timepiece or a functional yet elegant watch, you know that you are getting the absolute best with Swiss craftsmanship.
And the prices reflect that!
One of our tour guides explained that you truly get what you pay for. She said that she has been wearing the same Swiss watch for 25 years, and has only had to replace the band.
8. Skiing and Snowboarding
Skiing and snowboarding in Switzerland are top-notch, thanks to the country’s world-class resorts, reliable snow, and gorgeous Alpine scenery.
Whether you’re a beginner or a seasoned pro, you’ll find slopes that are just right for your skill level.
While we did not have the time to ski or snowboard, much to John’s great disappointment, it did look quite amazing.
The infrastructure is impressive, with modern lifts and well-maintained trails.
We did have the opportunity to watch some incredible ski jumping in Engelberg, which was a lot of fun.
But personally, I’ll stick to enjoying the vibrant après-ski culture in Switzerland’s resort towns!
9. The Gorgeous Lakes
Switzerland’s lakes are definitely a huge reason to visit this amazing country.
These gorgeous lakes, set against the backdrop of the Alps, offer picture-perfect views and a truly peaceful setting.
Not only are they pretty to look at, but we enjoyed cruising on the crystal-clear lakes, strolling around the shoreline, and even taking a ‘refreshing’ dip in one.
Whether it’s Lake Geneva, Lake Lucerne, or one of the many lesser-known lakes, each has its own charm and is a huge plus when visiting Switzerland.
10. Scenic Small Towns
We found that visiting Switzerland’s small towns was like stepping into a storybook.
These towns, often nestled between mountains or alongside lakes, are home to traditional Swiss architecture, cobblestone streets, and a peaceful way of life.
Places like Grindelwald, Gruyères, and Lauterbrunnen are absolutely gorgeous with their quaint houses, historic sites, and local markets.
Even smaller towns like Entelbuch and Engelberg are really pretty, with plenty of scenic views, homey cafes, and lovely hiking trails.
11. Cultural Diversity
Switzerland’s cultural diversity is another great reason to visit.
With four official languages (German, French, Italian, and Romansh) and a mix of cultural influences, the country offers a unique mosaic of traditions and lifestyles.
Sometimes this even makes Switzerland feel like several small countries rolled into one.
We definitely noticed the difference while road-tripping from one region to another. On the downside, it sometimes made communicating a little difficult.
Between John and myself, we are fluent in English, German, and Italian, and have some understanding of French.
Yet, there were some places in Switzerland where we came across people we couldn’t speak to.
But on the plus side, the variety of festivals, architecture and food, was amazing.
You can expect to have a French-inspired meal in Geneva, explore Italian-style architecture in Ticino, or experience traditional German customs in Zurich.
That’s pretty awesome!
12. Museums and Art Galleries
Switzerland is home to a variety of world-class museums and art galleries.
In cities like Zurich, Geneva, and Basel, you’ll find world-class art museums showcasing works by renowned artists like Picasso, Monet, and Van Gogh.
Historical museums delve into Switzerland’s fascinating past, highlighting everything from medieval artifacts to modern-day innovations.
Don’t miss unique museums like the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Museum in Geneva or the Swiss Transport Museum in Lucerne, offering interactive exhibits and immersive experiences.
13. One of the Cleanest Countries Around
I can honestly say, that Switzerland is one of the cleanest countries we have ever visited.
Not only are the city streets and parks super clean, but even out in nature everything seems well-kept.
While I am always impressed with how clean German cities are, I can’t get past the stupid amounts of graffiti that you see everywhere.
In the Swiss cities that we visited, we never saw any of that!
The Swiss are also pretty serious about recycling and keeping things in order, which probably explains why it’s so pleasant everywhere you go.
14. A Ton of Activities to Get Your Adrenaline Going
In Switzerland, there’s no shortage of activities to get your adrenaline pumping.
If you’re into thrills, you’ve got options like hang gliding and paragliding. We (enviously) watched plenty of people paragliding from Mount Stanserhorn during our visit there.
And if that is a little too much excitement for you, we would definitely recommend trying out a mountain coaster.
These coasters let you zip down the mountainside with the wind in your hair and epic scenery all around.
Our kids had an absolute blast during our mountain coaster experience.
It’s a fun way for anyone looking to add a little excitement to their trip.
Trust me when I say, doing something this adventurous against such a beautiful backdrop—it’s an experience you won’t forget anytime soon.
15. Most Incredible Train Rides
Switzerland is famous for its train rides, and they’re seriously incredible.
More than just transportation, these train rides offer a scenic overview of this amazing country.
The routes take you through the heart of the Alps and small charming towns, and past incredible lakes.
The Glacier Express and the Bernina Express are two great examples of standout rides that offer gorgeous views you won’t see anywhere else.
Then there’s the Pilatus Railway. The steepest cogwheel train in the world on Mount Pilatus is definitely super cool to ride.
Best Time to Visit Switzerland
The best time to visit Switzerland really depends on what you want to experience.
If you’re into skiing or winter sports, December to March is prime time because the snow is great and the ski resorts are in full swing.
We really enjoyed our visit during the winter because the views were fantastic, it really wasn’t too cold (c’mon we’re Canadian!), and there were fewer crowds.
For hiking, sightseeing, or enjoying the cities without the cold, summer, from June to August, is ideal. We loved our summer visits.
The weather is warm, the days are longer, and everything is green and lively. It’s also a great time for festivals and outdoor activities.
Spring (April to May) and fall (September to October) are the shoulder seasons. They’re less crowded and the scenery is beautiful, with blooming flowers in spring and colorful leaves in fall.
Plus, the temperatures are milder, making it comfortable for exploring.
In all honesty, when isn’t a good time to visit Switzerland?
How Many Days Do You Need in Switzerland?
How many days you need in Switzerland really depends on what you want to see and do.
We spent about a week road-tripping through Switzerland during one of our visits and definitely could have used more time.
However, a week to ten days is a good start.
This gives you enough time to explore a couple of cities, like Zurich and Geneva, or maybe some small towns, enjoy a scenic train or boat ride, get a taste of the mountains, and even see some of the major attractions.
If you’re pressed for time, you can still get a nice snapshot in about three to five days, focusing on a specific region or a couple of key attractions.
But if you’ve got more time, extending your stay to two weeks will give you the best opportunity to visit a few off-the-beaten-path places, as well as many of the popular destinations.
Remember, Switzerland might be small, but it’s packed with a ton of things to see and do.
Reasons Not to Visit Switzerland
While Switzerland is a fantastic destination, there are a few reasons why it might not suit everyone.
Except for the high cost, these reasons may not be deal-breakers for some and certainly didn’t get in the way of us having a fabulous time.
Final Thoughts
So, is Switzerland worth the trip? Absolutely.
Sure, it might be a bit pricey and gets its fair share of tourists.
But the stunning scenery, top-notch public transport, delicious chocolate and cheese, plus all the outdoor fun you can have, definitely make it a standout place to visit.
Whether you’re there for the mountains, the culture, or just some good old fun, Switzerland has a little something for everyone.
So trust us when we say, Switzerland is a must-add destination to your travel bucket list.
