We spent one day in Engelberg during our last visit to Switzerland and absolutely fell in love with it. The village is absolutely charming and was so much fun to spend time in.
As the largest winter and summer holiday destination in central Switzerland, you can do everything from skiing and snowboarding to hiking, conquering a rope course or a via Ferrata, tasting some incredible cheese, or relaxing in a spa.

We have put together a list of the top activities in Engelberg that are perfect for families and guaranteed to make your visit memorable:
1. Be Awed by Mt Titlis
Visiting Mt. Titlis is an absolute must when you’re in Engelberg.
This impressive mountain not only offers jaw-dropping views but there are a ton of family-friendly activities for you to try.
And the best part is, the adventure begins as you are heading up the mountain. Hop on the Titlis Rotair, the world’s first revolving cable car, for a truly unique experience.
This awesome cable car rotates as you ascend, giving you a 360-degree view of the Alps.
Once at the summit, you definitely don’t want to miss the Titlis Cliff Walk, Europe’s highest suspension bridge (unless you’re deathly afraid of heights, that is).
At 3,041m in altitude and 500m above the ground, imagine the views! Since the bridge is ‘fenced in’ on both sides, it is safe for younger kids to walk on.
Other activities include the Titlis Glacier Cave to explore, the Ice Flyer chairlift that swoops you over glacier crevasses and the Glacier Park for enjoying fun snow activities like snow tubing.
Keep in mind, that Glacier Park has snow all year round. So if you plan to visit, make sure that you bundle up, even in summer!
2. Enjoy Some Time in Trübsee
Located at an intermediate station on the way to Mt. Titlis, Trübsee is the perfect place to go if you are looking for a more relaxed way to spend the day with the kids.
Of course, one of the best things to do while visiting Trübsee is to walk the trail.
The 3.3km hike, which loops around the Trübsee lake, offers an easy walk on a relatively smooth dirt path. This makes the trail suitable for all-terrain strollers.
But what makes this trail truly awesome, are the interactive stations you will find all the way around the trail.
Not only will you find plenty of picnic areas with grills and free firewood, but there are a variety of themed playgrounds all around the lake.
You will even find hammocks to relax in while you soak in the gorgeous views of the lake, surrounding mountains and the glacier.
And if we still haven’t convinced you to head to Trübsee, you will also find a restaurant with an outdoor patio, trampolines and a large jump into an air pillow, as well as pony and donkey rides for the kids.
3. Test Your Courage on a Via Ferrata
Mount Titlis at Engelberg is a rock climbers’ paradise. Home to five Via Ferrata routes, eight climbing gardens, various boulder spots and countless alpine climbing routes, there is something for everyone (even younger climbers).
A Via Ferrata is a guided climb on the mountain using a fixed route with cables and ladders. It’s like an obstacle course built onto the side of a mountain.
You’ll get to scale cliffs and cross high bridges while securely clipped to a safety cable, making it a thrilling adventure for the whole family. We absolutely loved our Via Ferrata experience!
The five routes include one easy route for beginners, two moderately challenging routes, and two difficult courses.
For families with younger kids, the climbing gardens located in the Fürenalp area, offer eight scaled-back versions of a Via Ferrata.
It’s a great way to burn off some energy while getting to enjoy the amazing mountain scenery.
4. Explore the Iconic Benedictine Monastery
The Benedictine Monastery in Engelberg dates back to 1120 and is a central part of the village’s heritage.
Also known as Engelberg Abbey or Engelberg Kloster, this is a must-see attraction when in Engelberg.
The monastery is open to the public, offering tours or self-guided visits.
You can see the gorgeous architecture inside the church, visit the cheese and flower shop, or wander through the herb garden.
5. Taste All the Cheese at a Local Cheese Factory
And speaking of cheese, the monastery is actually home to a famous cheese factory where you can watch the traditional techniques of cheese-making.
If you love cheese as much as our family does, you can’t miss this!
And while there are several cheeses to try, be sure to taste the Engelberger Klosterglocke cheese, which is the local specialty.
The Engelberg Abbey makes sheep, goat, and alpine cheeses, as well as a variety of yogurts, making it a fun visit for families.
There’s also a shop on site where you can buy local products which would make a perfect souvenir (or in our case, a snack for the ride back to Lucerne).
Of course, if you want to sample the various cheese before you buy them, head to the small onsite restaurant where you can enjoy all the cheeses on offer.
6. Relax on a Horse-Drawn Carriage Ride
I have to say, taking a horse-drawn carriage ride through Engelberg was my favourite way to see the town.
We were picked up at the Engelberg-Titlis base station, and were taken on a slow tour through the gorgeous streets of Engelberg.
Our driver talked to us about many of the sites that we passed, and even stopped for us to watch some ski jumping that was going on during our visit.
And because we were visiting Engelberg in the winter, we were given these incredibly cozy, locally-made sheepskin blankets to cuddle up under.
I honestly didn’t want to give those blankets back! The only thing missing would have been a thermos of hot chocolate!
This laid-back ride is perfect for families who want to relax and enjoy the scenery after a long day of sightseeing, hiking, or hitting the slopes.
7. Learn Something New at the Tal Museum
The Tal Museum is located in a historic building known as the “Heraldry House.”
Built in 1786-1787, the museum allows you to see what life was like for the locals in the late 18th century.
You will find exhibits featuring historic living spaces, everyday household items, and artifacts that highlight both the cultural and practical aspects of life in the valley during that period.
The museum is small and won’t take you too much time to see. But it was an interesting place to visit.
8. Have Some Fun at the Rope Park in Engelberg
The Rope Park in Engelberg is an awesome place for families with kids 10 years and older.
It has six obstacle courses with varying levels of difficulty, so everyone will be sure to find one that is perfect for their skill level.
The courses include footbridges, rope ladders, ziplines and slides. It really is a lot of fun for both the kids and for those who are kids at heart!
Before starting, everyone gets safety training to make sure they have a safe and fun experience.
9. Stroll Through the Old Town
We absolutely loved strolling through Engelberg’s Old Town.
The village is filled with narrow streets, charming buildings, quaint shops, and cozy cafes.
And let’s not forget the incredible views of the mountains! Just wow!
Engelberg is the perfect place to find the perfect souvenir, browse local crafts, or try some Swiss treats.
The village is quite walkable, so there it was easy for us to get around and enjoy many of the sites.
10. Follow the Game Trail
If you are visiting Engelberg with kids, this is a fun (and sneaky) way to get the younger crowd interested in sightseeing.
Head to the Tourist Information Centre where you can pick up a bag filled with everything you need for the adventure.
While taking part in the Game Trail is free, you will need to leave a refundable deposit for the Bag.
Next, you will follow the map to all the major sites in Engelberg. Play a game, enjoy the attraction, and have a great time!
The game trail consists of 19 different posts. At each post, you will find a different game to play.
The Game Trail takes approximately 2-2 1/5 hours if players complete the whole course of games.
The Games are available to play daily from 8:00 am to 12:00 noon and 1:00 – 5:00 pm. Be sure to ask for the English instructions.
11. Be Mesmerized By World-Class Ski Jumping
Engelberg is home to an impressive ski jump facility that hosts several international competitions.
There, you can watch professional athletes soar through the air with incredible skill and precision.
We happened to be visiting during one of these competitions, so we got to see what all the fuss was about. John LOVED it!
And I have to admit, it was pretty fun to watch (although quite difficult to photograph with just my iPhone).
Just a heads up, Engelberg does get quite busy during these competitions. You may have a little trouble finding accommodations or restaurant reservations during these events.
12. Explore All That Mount Brunni Has to Offer
Mount Brunni is on the sunny side of Engelberg and is known for its family-friendly activities and incredible views.
Trust me when I tell you, there is a ton for families to do in Brunni, so plan to spend a day (or more) there!
Mount Brunni is actually divided into two sections. You can easily reach the first section with the Brunni-Bahn from Engelberg Village.
There, you will find picnic tables (some even with umbrellas), BBQ grills (with free firewood), a huge playground perfect for kids of all ages, hiking trails, and the summer toboggan.
You definitely don’t want to miss the summer toboggan! This giant mountain coaster is 660 metres long with eight sharp bends and four small ones and can reach speeds of 50 km/h.
The second section of Brunni is known as Brunnihütte Herzlisee and can be reached by chairlift from the first section.
At Brunnihütte, you will find a barefoot trail that lets you experience different natural textures, picnic tables and grills, a snack shop that sells sausages and ice cream, as well as a large restaurant with an outdoor terrace.

13. Enjoy a Scenic Hike
Engelberg is an absolutely gorgeous area in Switzerland. So it only stands to reason that there would be plenty of opportunity for some incredible hiking.
The area offers a variety of trails suitable for all ages and fitness levels, from leisurely walks along the valley floor to more challenging hikes up the mountainsides.
During our winter visit, we really enjoyed just strolling on the path in the valley. It took us past the ski runs and ski jump area, along the Engelbergeraa River, and into town.
Another great option for a more extended hike is the Four Lakes Trail. This trail starts at Trübsee and takes you past three other beautiful lakes.
It is suitable for more adventurous families, with options to shorten the hike if needed.
For a slightly different experience, the Brunni Trail is an educational path that goes through alpine pastures and offers fantastic views of the mountains.
This trail is also easy to navigate and includes a variety of interactive stops that can be fun for the kids.
14. Hit the Slopes
Hitting the slopes at Engelberg-Titlis is a highlight for anyone visiting Engelberg.
This ski resort offers a wide range of slopes suitable for all skill levels, from easy runs for beginners to challenging ones for the pros.
Not to mention, it’s one of the biggest ski areas in Central Switzerland. Engelberg-Titlis boasts over 80 kilometres of runs!
Plus, the high altitude and Titlis Glacier mean you’re pretty much guaranteed good snow.
John was definitely disappointed that we didn’t have enough time for him to do a little skiing or snowboarding.
And I was disappointed that I couldn’t take in a little Après-ski at one of Titlis – Engelberg’s chalets!
You can end your day on the slopes either on a sun terrace at Trübsee in the Engel & Bengel Bar or right at the base station.
Both places offer lively music, outdoor firepits to warm up, and of course, drinks and food!
15. Soar Through the Skies on a Paragliding Flight
This activity may require a little more courage – ok, a LOT more courage than the others – but the payoff is huge.
Paragliding gives you the opportunity to see Engelberg from a bird’s eye view. And the best part is, even beginners can give it a try with a tandem flight.
While we have yet to try paragliding, it is definitely on our bucket list!
You can take off from various points around the mountain, with the most popular being Brunni and Fürenalp.
Flights generally last between 10 to 30 minutes, depending on weather conditions and the type of flight you choose.
There are a couple of different flight schools in the area that offer paragliding packages.
They may have age, height or weight restrictions, so it is best to contact them if you have younger kids who want to participate.
16. Unwind at the Eienwäldli Rock Adventure Pool
The Eienwäldli Rock Adventure Pool in Engelberg is a great spot for families to unwind after a long day of sightseeing.
Located at the Sporthotel Eienwäldli, the pool is heated to a comfortable 32°C and features a variety of water-based attractions including whirlpools, massage jets, and a paddling pool with a slide for kids.
For the adults, the pool area includes a steam grotto and rain grotto, providing a full spa experience.
The adventure pool also boasts a waterfall, which definitely adds to the ambiance and spa-like feel of the facility.
Best of all, you do not need to be a guest at the Sporthotel Eienwäldli to enjoy the Eienwäldli Rock Adventure Pool.
The pool is open to the public, which means anyone can visit and enjoy the facilities there.
