John and I have been there several times, both with and without the kids, and I NEVER tire of its charm.
And I ALWAYS look forward to going back!
The good news is that if you happen to be following the Romantic Road through Germany, then Rothenburg is one of the stops.
No matter how you end up in Rothenburg, this gorgeous little medieval town has more than enough to keep you busy for 24 hours (and more if you have the time).

- Marktplatz – Rothenburgโs central square, surrounded by colourful buildings and home to festivals, markets, and the famous Christmas tree.
- Rathaus – The historic Town Hall with a mix of Gothic and Renaissance architecture, and a tower you can climb for great views.
- St. Jakobskirche – A 14th-century church known for its gorgeous stained glass and a wooden altar carved by Tilman Riemenschneider.

How to Spend 24 Hours in Rothenburg ob der Tauber
Rothenburg ob der Tauber might be small, but it’s packed with history, unique attractions, and tasty treats.
We made sure that everything in this itinerary is easy to reach on foot to maximize the time you spend in this awesome town.
In fact, this is very close to the itinerary we used during one of our visits to Rothenburg.
๐จ Pro Tip – When looking for directions on how to get to Rothenburg, make sure that you look up “Rothenburg ob der Tauber,” as there are actually TWO Rothenburgs in Germany!
Morning
9:00 AM โ Breakfast at Brot & Zeit
To start off your day right, we recommend that you head over to the Brot & Zeit for breakfast.
This cute little cafe is pretty popular as it opens quite early in the morning (6 am to be exact).
Inside, you will find a huge selection of freshly baked artisan breads, pastries, and sandwiches.
There is enough variety of breakfast options even for the pickiest of eaters.
We recommend the pretzels! They were out of this world yummy!
With both indoor and outdoor seating, this little hidden gem is the perfect place to start your day.
10:00 AM โ Explore Marktplatz and the Rathaus
Just a 2-minute walk from Brot & Zeit is the historic Marktplatz, or Market Square.
This is the heart of Rothenburg, and where you will find the Farmers’ Market in the summer, and the main Christmas Market in the winter.
The square is surrounded by gorgeous colourful buildings filled with boutiques and cafes.
The Rathaus, or Town Hall, can also be found here. Inside the Rathaus, you can purchase s ticket to climb the tower.
While this would not be an option if you have mobility issues, we would certainly recommend doing this otherwise. The tower offers fantastic views of the city and countryside outside of the walls.
You will also find a glockenspiel at Marktplatz.
While not as grand as the one in Munich, the moving characters tell the story of Rothenburg’s Mayor, who saved Rothenburg during the Thirty Years’ War by drinking a gallon of wine in one gulp!
11:00 AM โ Sample the Iconic Schneeballen
We are a foodie family. This means that we are always up for sampling local treats and delicacies.
A “Schneeball” or Snowball is a treat that consists of a ball of fried pastry, covered in either icing sugar, chocolate, or other fun toppings.
Some will even be filled with Marzipan.
These cookie-like treats have existed in Rothenburg for over 400 years. They were pretty good, too!
We tried the classic icing sugar Schneeball (which was my fave), and one covered in chocolate.
Just a heads up, they were quite messy to eat, so make sure that you have some napkins!
Schneeballen can be found in several of the small bakeries around town.
We found that the taste was consistent no matter where we purchased them.
11:30 AM โ Explore the Town, Including St. Jakobskirche and the Plรถnlein
One of my favourite things to do in Rothenburg is just to walk around town and browse in all the little shops.
You will find everything from interesting souvenirs and trinkets to clothing, housewares, and traditional decor items.
We found a little shop that was selling miniature ceramic houses.
Since I have a Christmas village that I set out during the holidays, I found the perfect piece to add to my collection!
Don’t forget to stop into St. Jakobskirche (St. James Church). Built in 1485, it’s a must-see when visiting Rothenburg.
Located in the heart of town, this Gothic-style church took a jaw-dropping 170 years to build.
The church is most known for its famous Holy Blood altarpiece, The Twelve Apostles Altar, and the fabulous stained glass windows.
Just keep in mind that you will need to pay a small fee to see the altars.
And of course, you can’t possibly leave Rothenburg without taking a photo at the Plรถnlein!
The Plรถnlein is a very picturesque intersection between two streets.
Not only is it iconic and instantly recognizable, but it is also the most photographed location in Rothenburg.
The term Plรถnlein refers to a โsmall square at a fountainโ. In Rothenburg’s case, you will find a yellow half-timbered crooked house with its fountain.
And while this infamous intersection makes for a perfect photo for the ‘Gram, good luck getting a shot without a ton of tourists in it!
Your best bet on capturing the perfect photo is either early in the morning or early evening, after all the tour buses leave.
Either that, or visit during the shoulder seasons when there are fewer tourists.
Afternoon
12:30 PM โ Lunch at Gasthof Butz
By this point in the day, we are usually starving!
So, if you are looking for a traditional German lunch, look no further than Gasthof Butz.
Located close to Marktplatz, this restaurant offers regional dishes like sausages, schnitzel, and homemade soups.
We found the ambiance to be quite nice, the service to be fantastic, the prices to be reasonable, and the food to be absolutely delicious!
2:00 PM โ Walk the City Walls
After lunch, you will definitely need to walk off your meal!
We would recommend a leisurely stroll along Rothenburgโs medieval city walls.
The walls circle the entire Old Town, providing wonderful views of the city rooftops, gardens, the various city towers, and the surrounding countryside.
The route is clearly marked, easy to walk, and provides great photo opportunities.
Access points can be found throughout the Old Town.
3:30 PM โ German Coffee Break at Cafe Einzigartig
One of my favourite traditions that I experienced while staying with my German relatives was “Kaffee und Kuchen” (coffee and cake).
Between 3 pm and 4 pm every day, my family would take a break from what they were doing to sit down a and have a coffee.
It’s something I like to do whenever I am back in Germany.
If this sounds appealing to you, head over to Cafรฉ Einzigartig.
This super cute cafe has delicious homemade cakes and pastries, and is a favourite with the locals.
During our last visit, it was pretty hard to get a table!
Evening
4:30 PM โ Visit Kรคthe Wohlfahrt Christmas Village
I am a lover of all things Christmas!
So, when I found out that Rothenburg was home to an entire Christmas store, AND that there was also a Christmas Museum, I was plenty excited!
Kรคthe Wohlfahrt is a huge shop dedicated to selling impressive Christmas decorations and ornaments.
You will find every kind of ornament, decoration, and festive housewares in a variety of holiday themes.
The museum, which is attached, is home to Christmas ornaments and decor from years past. It’s pretty interesting if you are into that sort of thing… which I AM!
Just a heads up though, Kรคthe Wohlfahrt is not a cheap place to shop. I dropped some serious coin on German-made decorations.
Which leads me to my next piece of advice. Always check to make sure that it is German-made.
We found tons of ornaments that were made in China and elsewhere, that were just not worth the money.
And while Rothenburg is the flagship store for Kรคthe Wohlfahrt, nowadays, you will find small pop-up shops all over the country during Christmas Market season.
6:30 PM โ Dinner at Zur Hรถll
End your day at Zur Hรถll, one of Rothenburgโs oldest and most atmospheric restaurants.
The restaurant is housed in a historic building dating back centuries! It’s pretty fabulous if you ask me!
Zur Hรถll is where you will find hearty Franconian dishes like roasted meats, dumplings, and local wines.
They even have a variety of seasonal dishes that are out of this world (if you are visiting in the spring, try their white asparagus soup).

8:00 PM โ Evening Night Watchman’s Tour
Finally, wrap up your day with the famous Night Watchman’s Tour.
An entertaining guide, dressed in historical attire, will lead you through the darkened streets of town by lamplight.
You’ll learn about Rothenburgโs interesting history, legends, and medieval life.
The Night Watchman Tour lasts for 1 hour and starts at Marktplatz every Friday and Saturday night at 8 pm for English speakers.
The German language tour begins at 9:30 pm in the same place.

But just a word of advice, because Rothenburg is such a small town, accommodations book up super fast during the high season, as well as during Christmas.
So trust me when I say, book as early as possible for the best choices.
Luxury
Gรคstehaus Edelzimmer
If youโre looking to stay right in the middle of everything, this top-rated guesthouse is a great pick. The rooms are stylish and set inside a beautiful historic building.
Hotel Herrnschlรถsschen
This small hotel is tucked inside an 11th-century building and has just eight rooms. Youโll also find a beautiful baroque garden and an on-site restaurant if youโre in the mood for a fancy dinner.
Moderate
Historik Hotel Gotisches Haus
If you like a bit of history with your stay, this hotel is a great choice. The rooms are comfortable with a classic Gothic-style decor, and the hotel is well-situated in the middle of town.

How to Get to Rothenburg ob der Tauber
Rothenburg ob der Tauber is in northern Bavaria, right near the center of Germany.
Itโs a popular day trip from cities like Munich, Frankfurt, Stuttgart, and Nuremberg.
There are a few different ways to get there, depending on your starting point.
By Train
Taking the train is one of the most common ways to reach Rothenburg.
Youโll usually need to transfer at least once, most often in Steinach. From there, itโs a quick local train ride straight into town.
Hereโs roughly how long it takes:
- From Frankfurt: about 2.5 to 3 hours with one or two transfers
- From Munich: around 3 hours with at least one transfer
- From Nuremberg: roughly 1.5 to 2 hours with a change in Ansbach or Steinach

By Car
Driving is probably the easiest option if youโre comfortable behind the wheel. Rothenburg sits just off the A7 motorway.
Itโs about 2 hours from both Munich and Frankfurt, and just over an hour from Nuremberg.
Parking can be a bit of a pain thoughโmore on that below.
By Bus
Several companies offer day tours to Rothenburg from cities like Munich and Frankfurt.
This is a great option if you donโt feel like navigating train schedules or doing the drive yourself.

The closest airports are in Nuremberg (NUE) and Frankfurt (FRA). From there, itโs easy to reach Rothenburg by train or rental car.
How to Get Around Rothenburg ob der Tauber
The best, and in my opinion, only way to get around Rothenburg ob der Tauber is on foot.
With the majority of the town being considered Pedestrian-only, not to mention the crowds of people during the daytime hours, it would even be difficult to get around by bike.
While there are some streets that allow cars, these streets are pretty narrow, and still quite crowded.
Do yourself a favour, leave your car outside the walls!
Public parking in Rothenburg ob der Tauber
Rothenburgโs Old Town is mostly car-free, which is great for walkingโbut not so great when you’re trying to unload your luggage.
If you’re staying overnight, youโll likely need to drop your bags at your hotel and then park just outside the town walls.
The good news is that there are several public lots nearby.
Theyโre easy to find, reasonably priced, and the machines accept both coins and cardsโsuper handy!
When is the Best Time to Visit Rothenburg ob der Tauber?
The best time to visit Rothenburg really depends on what you hope to see and do.
But no matter what time of year you decide to go, you definitely won’t be disappointed.
We have visited Rothenburg in both the summer and winter, and had a fabulous time on both occasions.
