In 2022, Uber went through a pretty extensive expansion of its program in Sicily. Uber partnered with the transportation app iTaxi, allowing users to see both available Uber cars as well as taxis, on the same platform.
The program isn’t perfect, however. You will find that Uber is more widely available in larger cities like Palermo and Catania.
If you happen to be in a smaller town, you can still use the Uber app. But more often than not, it will connect you with traditional metered taxis in the area if there are no Uber cars available.

What Do I Need to Know About Using Uber in Sicily?
Is Uber Legal in Sicily?
Yes. As we mentioned above, Uber is legal in Sicily.
During the early days when Uber was first starting out in Italy, the company was met with a lot of resistance. Although the fares were competitively priced with the legally medallioned taxis, Uber drivers only needed minimal licensing.
This caused a lot of problems, so the Italian courts deemed that Uber had an unfair advantage over taxis. As a result, Uber was only allowed to provide their higher-end “Uber Black” service.
Because this was considered a luxury car service, Uber Black was deemed not in direct competition with traditional taxis and was allowed to operate.

Is Uber Safe in Sicily?
Yes. Uber is safe to take in Sicily.
Not only do drivers need to go through a yearly background check, but the Uber app itself has several built-in safety features.
Of course, you still need to use common sense and follow some basic safety rules when using Uber in Sicily, or anywhere else for that matter.

Are Taxis Expensive in Sicily?
Yes. Taxis in Sicily are pretty 💵 expensive.
Taxis in Sicily are very 💵 overpriced, do not have set fares, and you will get hit with a variety of surcharges at the last minute.
In fact, we would recommend avoiding taxis, especially as a foreigner, because it just isn’t worth the hassle.
Most locals will also tell you that the majority of Sicilian taxi drivers will try to scam you in one way or another (more on that later).
That being said, if you find it absolutely necessary to hire a taxi, your best way to do it would be through the Uber app or another similar app that allows you to see your route and rate before stepping into the taxi.
This will give you additional peace of mind, and prevent most unnecessary surprises.

Is it Easy to Find Taxis in Sicily?

Tips for Taking a Taxi in Sicily
Here are some important things to know about taking taxis in Sicily:

Avoid These Taxi Scams in Sicily
Sicilian taxi drivers are notorious for trying to scam unsuspecting tourists. Here are some popular scams to be mindful about:
🚩 Driving Up the Meter Scam
This is the most common scam used with foreigners, and you probably won’t even know it happened! Here, taxi drivers will take the 🗺️ “scenic route” to get you to your destination.
The longer they drive around, the more they run up the meter, and the more money you will end up shelling out. The problem is, if you don’t know the area, it’s hard to tell if the taxi is taking the most direct route.
🚩 The Broken Meter Scam
If a taxi driver tries to tell you that their meter is broken, don’t fall for it. Ask him to let you out of the car.
All medallioned taxis in Sicily are legally required to have a working meter. So a “broken meter” is definitely a sign of a scam.
🚩 Not Clearing the Meter Scam
As we have mentioned, taxi fares are always metered. It is therefore essential to make sure that your driver resets the taximeter, and that it is running correctly before you begin your trip.
If it is not reset, that means you will end up paying more for mileage that you didn’t accumulate during your trip.

🚩 Not Enough Money Scam
Most taxis will only accept cash 💵 in Sicily. So you will need to be careful when paying your driver.
The way that the scam works is, your taxi driver might claim you didn’t give him enough money. He will tell you that, for instance, you only gave him a 5 Euro bill when you actually gave him a 20 or 50.
This is basically a sleight-of-hand trick. They keep a €5 bill in the palm of their hand as “proof” that you didn’t give them enough money.
The best way around this scam is to pay the driver in 💵 small bills. Count out each bill into their hand. Do not just hand over a wad of cash.
In addition to the scam, the driver will also claim not to have any change. So definitely make sure that you have small bills, to avoid further overpaying for your ride.
Taking the Public Bus in Sicily
An economical form of public transportation on the island is the bus.
And while there are several buses that run locally, as well as city-to-city, a little patience is required.
Unlike what you may be used to in North America, 🚌 bus schedules in Sicily are difficult to understand (even for the locals), and their timings are not very accurate.
However, if you aren’t on a tight schedule, we would totally recommend taking the bus as a safe and budget-friendly way to travel in Sicily.
Especially if you are travelling from one city to another, the buses are generally the faster option for travel, are air-conditioned and are pretty pleasant to travel in.
We took the bus from Castellamare del Golfo to Palermo, and then on to Erice. Aside from a little confusion with bus times during our transfer in Palermo, the process was pretty easy, and the bus was really comfortable.

🚌 Just a couple of things to keep in mind when travelling by bus:

Taking the Train in Sicily
Sicily has an extensive railway network that connects the island’s major cities and towns. The main train operator in Sicily is Trenitalia, which offers both regional and high-speed train services throughout the island.
With the train, you can easily explore Sicily’s beautiful coastline, stunning countryside, and historic sites, such as the ancient city of Syracuse or the breathtaking Valley of the Temples.
Taking the train in Sicily can be an enjoyable, budget-friendly and convenient way to travel and experience the island’s unique charm and beauty.
🚩 But just a heads up, from our experience, buses are often more reliable than trains in Sicily.
Is Sicily Walkable?
It depends. Sicily is a large island, so walking everywhere might not be practical. But many parts of the island are certainly walkable.
Sicily’s cities and towns are often compact, and they have plenty of charming streets and alleyways that are perfect for strolling and exploring.
If you’re visiting a city like Palermo, Syracuse, or Catania, you’ll find that many of the major attractions are within walking distance of each other.
Even outside the cities, there are plenty of scenic trails and paths that you can hike, such as the beautiful nature reserve of Zingaro or the breathtaking Mt. Etna volcano.
So, while you might need to use other forms of transportation to get around some areas, there are certainly plenty of walkable spots in Sicily that you can enjoy.
One thing to keep in mind when walking around Sicily is the heat. The warm and sunny weather can make walking uncomfortable during the hottest parts of the day. Make sure you bring plenty of water to stay hydrated!
