10 Most Instagram-Worthy Signs in Dōtonbori

Dōtonbori is one of the most famous streets in Osaka, and one of our favourite places that we visited in Japan.

As a foodie family, we not only wanted to taste all the foods, but we also wanted to see the lights, restaurants, and signs that have become landmarks in their own right.

And let me tell you, the signs did not disappoint!

Some are giant, some move, and all of them capture the fun side of the city.

We have put together a list of the ten signs you’ll still find today that are truly Instagram-worthy.

Most Instagram-Worthy Signs in Dōtonbori

If you’re heading to Osaka, a walk through Dōtonbori is a must.

After spending an afternoon strolling through the streets, we have put together a list of our favourite and most Instagram-worthy photo spots in Dōtonbori.

1. Glico Man

The Glico Running Man is Osaka’s most famous sign.

It shows a runner crossing a finish line with his arms raised in victory.

First put up in 1935, it advertises the Glico candy company (makers of Pocky).

It was also one of the first ad signs to switch to neon and later LED in the area.

📷 Photo Tip: Visit at dusk or night when it’s lit. Stand on the bridge or the sidewalk on the opposite side of the river for a good shot.

Honestly, we did not find the sign to be very interesting, especially when compared to some of the other giant signs.

But you will often find large crowds of people all trying to get that perfect photo for the ‘Gram.

📍 Location: Above the canal at Dōtonbori, near the Ebisubashi Bridge.

2. Kani Dōraku Giant Crab

Installed in 1960, this giant crab is another one of Dōtonbori’s most iconic signs.

Sitting at a whopping 6 meters (19.7 feet) wide, this giant crab has moving legs and claws that wave above the entrance of the Kani Doraku crab restaurant.

It’s one of the most popular crab restaurants in the area. In fact, you may want to make reservations if you would like to have dinner there.

What many people don’t realize is that there are actually 2 Kani Dōraku restaurants (with giant crab signs) in Dōtonbori.

The flagship restaurant, pictured above, is located nearest to the famous Glico Man sign and the Ebisubashi bridge.

It is also across the street, from the Family Mart with the Kuroge Wagyu Ittogai Yakiniku Dotonbori restaurant above it (giant statue of a cow wearing a kimono).

The second store is located further down the main street. This location is called Kani Doraku Dotonbori Higashi Mise and also has a giant crab sign.

This restaurant can be found closest to the Nipponbashi Bridge.

📍 Location: Both locations can be found along the main Dōtonbori street.

3. Kinryū Ramen Dragon

Kinryu, meaning “Golden Dragon,” certainly lives up to its name.

This ramen spot is where you will find a massive green and gold dragon climbing down the side of a bright red building.

Dotonbori - Dragon Statue

🐉 Fun Fact – In August 2024, the owners of Kinryū Ramen were forced to remove the tip of the dragon’s tail, as it encroached on the neighbouring building’s property. As a result, the artist who created the dragon, Masahide Nakamura, added a blue teardrop to its face to symbolize the sadness the artist felt.

It’s one of several Kinryū Ramen shops in the area, but the main one on Dōtonbori Street is the best known.

The restaurant is open 24 hours, so you can enjoy the popular spot anytime. Just be prepared for the long lines.

📍 Location: On Dōtonbori Street — look for the bright red storefront under the dragon.

4. Gateway Neon Sign (West End Dōtonbori)

At the western end of Dōtonbori Street, a large neon sign marks the entrance to the district.

It’s written in bold red and white letters with flashing lights.

This sign welcomes visitors coming from the Namba area and is one of the first things you see when entering Dōtonbori from that side.

Unfortunately, as you can see from our photo, we only saw the sign during the day.

And at that time, it really isn’t very Insta-worthy.

Our advice: go at night when the neon sign pops from the rest of the buildings around it.

5. Karl Ojisan Billboard

This hilarious cartoon face belongs to the mascot of the Japanese snack brand Meiji.

We thought he looked like the Japanese version of a sock monkey!

Dotonbori - Meiji Sign

This huge billboard measures approximately 4 m (13 ft.) tall and 18 m ( 59 ft.) wide.

At the top of every hour, Karl Ojisan’s hat lifts to reveal Kerota-kun, a small green frog character.

📍 Location: You’ll find this billboard along the main Dōtonbori strip, next to the Kani Dōraku Main Branch restaurant.

6. Maguro Nigiri Sushi Billboard (Sushi Hand)

If you love sushi, then the Maguro Nigiri Sushi sign should definitely be on your list to see.

The large 3D sign showing a giant piece of tuna nigiri sits above one of Dōtonbori’s sushi restaurants.

A huge hand holds it out as if offering it to the crowd below.

We thought it was a lot of fun while being perfectly suited to the area’s food-themed signs.

And in case you are interested, the shop the sign sits over is a conveyor belt sushi restaurant.

📍 Tip: The sign can be found above the Ganso Mawaru Genroku Sushi restaurant.

7. Kuidaore Taro Drum‑Playing Clown Sign

This drum-playing clown doll is a Dōtonbori legend.

First introduced in 1949, Kuidaore Taro has been entertaining crowds for decades and has become a mascot for Osaka’s food scene.

Dotonbori - Kuidaore Taro larg sign

The kids found him to be mildly creepy and referred to him as the Japanese Where’s Waldo! Ha!

Not only is Kuidaore Taro a huuuuge sign, but you will also find a life-sized version of him, in his striped outfit, standing inside the Nakaza Kuidaore Building, just off the main street.

8. Kushikatsu Daruma Angry Sign

For some reason, I found this sign to be sooo funny, that it became my fave while visiting Dōtonbori.

And considering how big it is, you truly can’t miss seeing it.

The angry chef holding skewers is the mascot for Kushikatsu Daruma.

The chef reminds customers of the restaurant’s most important rule: not to double-dip your sauce.

The sign started as a funny way to teach good manners, but now the angry chef is one of Dōtonbori’s most recognizable faces.

📍 Location: You will easily find this restaurant on the main street, not far from the Tazaemon Bridge.

9. Don Quijote Dōtonbori Ferris Wheel

Not exactly a sign, but impossible to miss.

The bright yellow oval-shaped Ferris wheel attached to the Don Quijote discount store is one of the quirkiest sights in Dōtonbori.

While the ride was not operational while we were visiting Dōtonbori, we definitely had not seen anything like this before!

The large sign in the middle of the Ferris wheel shows Ebessan, the god of business, holding Donpen, Don Quijote’s penguin mascot.

You’ll find it near the Ebisubashi Bridge, on the same side as the main Dōtonbori walkway.

📍 Location: Right by the canal, attached to Don Quijote Dōtonbori.

10. Giant Octopus

One of the most popular signs in Dōtonbori is the giant red octopus above the Takoyaki restaurant known as Dotonbori KUKURU Konamon Museum.

The octopus looks like it’s crawling down the building, holding a takoyaki ball in one of its tentacles.

Dotonbori - Red Octopus holding Takoyaki

The sign is colourful, fun, and very Osaka.

But don’t let the name fool you.

This place is not a museum, but a multilevel Takoyaki experience! Not only can you eat here, but you can also learn all about the history of Takoyaki, watch it being made, and learn all about the sauce that it is served in.

And in case you are wondering, the Takoyaki was deeeelicious! We purchased ours from the KUKURU sister location a few doors down.

📍 Location: It’s one of the easiest signs to find because it’s right on the main street, and usually has a line of people waiting for takoyaki.
