1. Stuttgart is the capital city of Baden-Württemberg.
With a population of around 600,000, Stuttgart is the sixth-biggest city in Germany.
2. Stuttgart gets its name from its horse-breeding past.
The name Stuttgart is thought to be derived from the Old High German word “stuotgarten”, meaning “stud farm” or “mare’s garden.”
It is believed to have been named by Duke Liudolf of Swabia, who founded the city in the 10th century to breed war horses for his cavalry during the Hungarian invasion of Europe.
3. It is the only German city with a municipal wine estate.
Known as the Weingut der Stadt Stuttgart, the estate is actually located right in the heart of the city.
Weingut der Stadt Stuttgart produces a range of high-quality wines, including the famous Trollinger and Riesling varieties, using sustainable and eco-friendly viticultural practices.
The estate also offers guided tours and wine tastings. So if you love wine, we would totally recommend heading over to sample some of the unique flavours of Stuttgart’s local wines.
4. Stuttgart has the highest density of scientific, academic and research organizations in Germany.

Stuttgart is considered to be the birthplace of the petrol-powered car. This is because Karl Benz and Gottlieb Daimler, two pioneers of the automobile industry, both hailed from the city.
In 1886, Benz developed the world’s first petrol-powered car, known as the Benz Patent Motorwagen, which was produced in a workshop in the city of Mannheim.
Meanwhile, in 1886 Daimler worked on developing a petrol engine that he used to modify a horse carriage, creating the world’s first four-wheeled motor vehicle.
7. Most stores and businesses in Stuttgart are closed on Sundays.
In Stuttgart, and most parts of Germany for that matter, stores and businesses are closed on Sundays.
There are a few exceptions which may include some bakeries, gas stations, and restaurants.
This is because Sunday is traditionally a day of rest and family time in Germany.
8. Stuttgart has a unique cityscape, with many buildings and streets built on steep hills and valleys.
Due to its unique topography, Stuttgart is often referred to as the “cradle of the automobile” and the “city of valleys”.

9. Stuttgart is home to some pretty mammoth trees.
Stuttgart is home to several unique mammoth trees, also known as giant sequoias, which are native to the United States.
These trees can grow up to 100 meters tall and live for over 3,000 years.
10. Stuttgart is one of the greenest cities in Europe.
The city is home to over 300 parks and gardens, including the sprawling Schlossgarten, Killesberg Park, and Rosenstein Park.
Stuttgart is also surrounded by beautiful forests and vineyards, making it a popular destination for people like myself, who love the outdoors.
11. Stuttgart is the second largest source of mineral water in Europe.
Stuttgart boasts 14 mineral water springs, making it a major source of mineral water in Europe.
In fact, Stuttgart ranks second only to the Obuda district in Budapest.
In case you are wondering, the springs are primarily located in the Bad-Cannstatt neighbourhood.

12. Stuttgart is a city of many stairs.
Stuttgart is famously known as the “city of stairs” due to its hilly terrain and numerous staircases.
With over 400 flights of stairs, translating roughly to about 20 kilometres (12.4 miles) of steps, Stuttgart’s public outdoor staircases make for a unique and challenging way to explore the city.
13. Cleaning is considered a public duty in Stuttgart.
Stuttgart’s unique Swabian tradition, known as ‘Kehrwoche’ (or ‘sweep week’), involves rotating responsibility for cleaning the public areas of rented buildings, among its residents. This includes hallways, steps, and pavements.
Believed to have originated from decrees issued in the 16th century, there are no written laws enforcing ‘Kehrwoche’ today.
However, it remains an important tradition that reflects the city’s commitment to cleanliness and community responsibility.
I definitely remember helping to mop the floors and sweep the walkways of my family’s apartment while spending summers in Germany!
14. Maultaschen, the local specialty, has a rather interesting history.
Maultaschen, the local specialty dish of Stuttgart, are basically giant ravioli. But apparently, they have quite a fascinating history!
Maultaschen are said to have been created by monks in the Middle Ages, who wanted to hide meat during Lent by wrapping it in pasta dough. 🤣

According to a study conducted in 2017, Stuttgart was ranked as the least stressful city to live in among the 150 cities surveyed worldwide.
The ranking was based on factors like its excellent public transportation system, green spaces, and low crime rates.

I honestly didn’t have a clue about this fun fact!
The teddy bear was invented in 1902 by Richard Steiff, a toy maker from Stuttgart.
The teddy bear went on to quickly become one of the world’s most beloved toys.
And I guess it’s really fitting that my very first teddy bear came from Stuttgart!

The Stuttgart Airport is located approximately 13 km south of the city centre. This international airport is the sixth busiest airport in Germany.
19. The city is a true automotive town.
Stuttgart is home to the headquarters of both Mercedes-Benz and Porsche, two of the world’s most iconic car brands.
In fact, the Porsche logo pays homage to the Stuttgart city crest by incorporating both the horse and the city name in the centre.

Stuttgart is home to the Cannstatter Volksfest, which is Europe’s second-largest beer festival after Oktoberfest in Munich.
